WASHINGTON - The United States has "credible intelligence from multiple sources" that al-Qaida is determined to launch an attack in the United States in the next few months that could be linked to events such as an upcoming international economic summit and the summer political conventions, Attorney General John Ashcroft (news - web sites) said Wednesday.

Speaking at a Justice Department (news - web sites) news conference, Ashcroft said the intelligence, together with recent public statements attributed to al-Qaida, "suggest that it is almost ready to attack the United States."

"This disturbing intelligence indicates al-Qaida's specific intention to hit the United States hard," Ashcroft said.

In particular, Ashcroft said, seven people being sought by the United States "all present a clear and present danger to America. All should be considered armed and dangerous."

The warning was not accompanied by an increase in the U.S. terror alert status, however.

FBI (news - web sites) Director Robert Mueller, who appeared with Ashcroft, cited a "heightened threat to United States' interests around the world. ....We do not know what form the threat might take."

The withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq (news - web sites) due to the political repercussions of the March 11 train bombings in Spain, Ashcroft added, could lead al-Qaida to attempt to influence U.S. politics.

The sudden warning returns the nation's attention to terrorism, the issue that President Bush (news - web sites) has highlighted as a central theme of his re-election campaign, after intense focus on other subjects like Iraq and prisoner abuses in Iraq. Bush has lost ground in the polls, falling in approval ratings to the lowest point of his presidency.

The intelligence does not contain specifics such as timing, method or place of an attack. But officials say it is highly credible and backed with greater corroboration than usual, including information that operatives may already be in the United States.

Mueller and Ashcroft drew new attention to enlarged photos of seven suspected al-Qaida operatives that the FBI has been pursuing for months. They include Adnan G. El Shukrijumah, a Saudi native who once lived in Florida, and Aafia Siddiqui, a woman from Pakistan who studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (news - web sites).

"We are not aware of details of a plan," Ashcroft said when pressed for specifics.

The attorney general said recent intelligence indicates that al-Qaida operatives now may be traveling with their families to attract less suspicion and that the terror network has been seeking recruits "who can portray themselves as European."

He portrayed the "ideal al-Qaida operative" as an individual in the late 20s or early 30s.

To focus on the threat, the FBI has established a 2004 Threat Task Force and FBI analysts are reviewing previously collected intelligence to see if it contains any clues to the latest threat. There will also be a series of interviews conducted by the FBI with individuals who could have information about potential plots.

Earlier, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said there are no current plans to lift the national alert status from yellow, where it has stood since January. That's the midlevel alert level on a five-step warning program.

"First of all, every day we take a look at the overall threat reporting that we receive," Ridge said on NBC's "Today Show."

"There's not a consensus within the administration that we need to raise the threat level. ... We do not need to raise the threat level to increase security. Right now, there's no need to put the entire country on a (elevated) national alert," he said.

Asked whether Ridge's comment suggested a difference of opinion between his office and Ridge's, Ashcroft told reporters: "I believe we're all on the same page."

Mueller said that "extraordinary precautions" already were being taken to protect the sites of the two political conventions — the Democratic convention in Boston in late July and the Republican convention in New York in late August — as well as next month's Group of Eight economic summit on Sea Island in Georgia.

Some law enforcement and firefighter union representatives, supporters of Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) for president, suggested that the timing of the threat report was suspicious because of polls showing a sagging approval rating for President Bush. International Association of Firefighters President Harold Schaitberger told reporters in a conference call that the intelligence has been in the government's hands for weeks.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan, however, denied that there is a political aspect to the threat report.

"The president believes it's very important to share information appropriately," McClellan said. "We do that in a number of ways when it comes to looking at the threats we face here in the homeland."

They might get assistance from Pakistani intelligence, both logistical and financial. And shelter in religious communities sponsored by Saudi-Arabian "charities".

Bring it on! Bitches. If they attack we'll (the US) just have to bomb the hell out of another country. Possibly Saudi Arabia. ;)

Not a terrorist threat!! I could have never imagined it!

There have most likely been dozens of terrorist attacks that have been foiled; the only reason we're hearing this IMHO is so we don't think about Abu Gharib anymore.

U.S links Canadians to new terror threat
By OLIVER MOORE
Globe and Mail Update (http://globeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20040526.wwarn0526_4/BNStory/International/)

Amid fears of an imminent Islamist attack, the Bush administration has tried to energize the hunt for terrorists by reissuing old details about two Canadians thought to have trained as pilots.

The two are among a group of seven people being sought by U.S. authorities who say that terrorists could be planning a major attack “within months.”

The suspects – six men and a woman – pose a “clear and present danger” to the United States in the lead-up to the presidential election in November, U.S. Attorney-General John Ashcroft told reporters in Washington.

Two of the suspects were identified by Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller as Canadians. According to FBI information, they are 38-year-old Abderraouf Jdey, born in Tunisia, and 41-year-old Amer El-Maati, born in Kuwait.

“Abderraouf Jdey appears in a martyrdom video that was seized in Afghanistan,” Mr. Mueller said. “His tape and the tape of four others is the last will and testament of five possible jihad martyrs. He was reportedly selected to get flight training in preparation for a second attack in the United States.”

Mr. Mueller described Mr. El-Maati as “an al-Qaeda member and a licensed pilot” and said that he is believed to have discussed hijacking a plane in Canada and flying it into a building in the United States.

Public Security Minister Anne McLellan, speaking to reporters outside her constituency office in Edmonton, said that there is no intelligence suggesting a threat to Canada.

“It is not known the whereabouts of any of the seven, but we have no reason to believe they are in Canada,” she said.

The disclosure that Canadians are posing a risk to the United States should not hinder the “seamless” relationship between the countries, she added, pointing out that one of the other suspects was born in the United States.

“This is not about nationality, this is about people who, in this context, have been described as constituting a clear and present danger to the United States of America. Their nationality is irrelevant.”

There are no immediate plans in Washington to raise the terror-threat warning level, but administration officials are concerned about several high-profile targets that are coming up, including the G8 meeting and the nomination conventions of both the Republican and Democratic parties.

By drawing new attention to suspected terrorists that the FBI has been pursuing for months, Wednesday's announcement re-focused U.S. attention on terrorism – President George W. Bush's strong suit in the November election. But Mr. Ashcroft rejected the suggestion that the announcement was timed to deflect attention from problems in Iraq.

He said that the threat had been substantiated by multiple sources.

“Credible intelligence ... indicates that al-Qaeda intends to attack the United States within the next few months,” he told the Washington press briefing. “I don't think my job is to worry about what skeptics think.”

Mr. Mueller said that law-enforcement officials do not know where or when terrorists plan to strike.

“For the next few months we have reason to believe that there will be a heightened threat to United States interests around the world,” Mr. Mueller said. “Each of these individuals is known to have a desire and the ability to undertake planning and facilitation [of] an attack against the United States.”

Mr. Ashcroft said that the public should be on the lookout for the seven suspects, who he described as armed and dangerous.

Also being sought are Adnan G. El Shukrijumah, 29, Adam Yahiye Gadahn, 26, Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, age unknown, Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, age unknown, and a woman named Aafia Siddiqui, 32.

A senior counterterrorism official told Associated Press that there is a “steady drumbeat” of information coming in that suggests that al-Qaeda will hit the United States “hard.”

The information is among the most disturbing received by the government since the attacks in September of 2001, the official said. It was described as extremely credible and backed by an unusually high level of corroboration.

you know....if you see them contact your local FBI office....sorta doesnt sound right...first of all It would be very hard for me to tell who they are and as a ex-Doorman at a bar and would let 1,000s in every night I would say that I would not remember any of these faces unless I have a poster to check them with....and even then I know I would feel really stupid, embarrased and most of all sorry for calling the FBI while Ive got a wrist lock on some person I thought that was named Mulla-bora-wanna-boma-usa, and it ended up being somebody like the guy up the street who my Mother taught in school and she buys her gas from....so really these posters cant be that effective for the average joe like myself to see.. maybe cops ect.

If America's Most Wanted can work, why can't posters? Bigger pictures would help though.
