I am on the shop for a new truck. 4*4, ext cab, v6 auto, between under 20k. Anyone have any ad,
Looking heavily at tacoma's and sierras.

Toyotas are good. I think the Tacoma is the North American version of the Hilux, and I love the Hilux.

I am leaning towards the tacoma, much more customizable. The advantage of the sierra is that Chevy is running crazy deals right now.

A reliable truck would be the Honda Ridgeline. Its more expensive but a better overall truck. My opinion! p-)

I don't know. Honda cars are well known for their reliability and performance. But that truck is very knew. If anything wait a few years for them to get the kinks out of it. Toyota is still number 1 in my books.

Go Toyota.
We have one at my work and it is a very nice truck to drive in the woods.

I have heard nothing but good things from Toyota's. A buddy of mine had a 4 cylinder Tacoma and got well over 200k miles without doing anything to it but regular scheduled maintenance (oil changes, breaks, etc)

The Honda Ridgeline looks like afterbirth. Can’t say anything about their quality though.

If you are looking at American made, the majority of people who pull RV trailers a lot use Dodge or Ford. Most company, city, and government fleets are Ford. That usually says something about cost of maintenance and durability.

Also if you deal with the fleet manager at the dealerships, instead of the regular salespeople, you will usually get a better deal.

Good luck!

Skip the Tundra. If you are looking for a smaller truck then the Tacoma is alright. If you are looking for something bigger then go with the Chevy or GMC.

Hilux good!

4 banger turbo diesel(diesel's often cheaper outside of the US for those that don't know).

AWESOME fuel economy and can pull an aircraft carrier plus it fits 4 good sized people and all their junk in the back, AND can fit in a regular sized car park.

I've got the Mitsubishi verison of the Hilux.

You pretty much can't go wrong with a Toyota.....the Tacoma or Tundra are great reliable trucks. Do the routine upkeep and it will run a long time.

That said, the Chevy/GMC diesel is a great choice too. And they can be converted to run on vegi oil or other alternative fuels (something to think about in a SHTF scenario where you may not have easy access to regular fuel sources). Plus in today's world of rising fuel prices, you can still get veggie fuel for comparably low prices, and better mpg to boot.

The Toyotas and the diesel Chevy/GMCs are my top two choices when I am ready to buy a new truck later this year.

Good luck with your search and impending purchase !

The Taco and Ridgeline are both excellent vehicles.
I prefer the older T100 and 1st generation Tundra.

One thing to watch out for with the Tacoma; I was looking at a 4 dr 2WD w/ the long bed and it required unleaded hi-test (93 octane). If that's not an issue, they are great trucks. Don't overlook the Nissan Frontier, just as bullet-proof as the Toyota and didn't need hi-test.

The Mitsubishi Raider and Dodge Dakota are the same truck with different badges.

I actually thought about the nissan, but they get horrible gas mileage.

Maybe it's an Australian thing, but I'd never entertain the thought of buying a petrol 4wd, turbo diesel is the only way to go down here.

Whaaaa? Mine takes the cheap stuff.

'07 Taco 2 wd with access cab, drove it off the lot for $24700 (January '07) with 7 yr/100k warranty (stupid of me to pay $1500 for, but if I manage to blow the tranny I'll be in luck) and tax, title and license.

Great truck, although since it is not 4 wd I cannot attest to its ability in that department. But a helluva a truck for sure. I just wish they would sell the diesel versions in the US :(

I think I'll be a Toyota truck lifer.

Without a doubt, but there is no way I am going to get 200k out of a Sierra.

cinoeye
03-23-2008, 04:38 PM
That is true, but alo consider, it is much cheaper to fix Sierra than Toyota.
Now you can say Toyota is more reliable, but I'm talking also about brakes and other regular maintaning.

Good luck!

If the Nissan Frontier is the same as the Nissan Navara (European version) I would not buy. It scored the lowest marks in the latest safety tests. Safety First!

I wish. In California, we have restrictive laws regarding diesels. You will not find many diesel engines with exception going to lage trucks, like the Ford F250 class and up.

Some stupid save the whales bullcrap.

I've owned a 2wd toyota hilux ute (2nd hand), went like a dream into the 300s kms, that is until the significant other forgot a couple services and that motors require oil.......She has now been educated and has an 02 ford courier ute.

I drive a mid 90s Hilux Surf (4 runner), turbo diesel 3L and don't think i'll ever change, apart from to a later model or over to a straight Hilux, But I'm not a fan of the latest body shape I prefer the early 2000s shape.

The later models turbo diesel makes up for everything. It's got boat loads of get up and go.

Unfortunately in the US Toyota diesels are rare. Many manufacturer's models carried elsewhere are not available in diesel here.

Older Toyota diesels even command a slightly increased value in good condition because they are hard to find. We ran one for many miles until a tree viciously assaulted the front end.

They are just not good, my first car was a 1987 Escort. It f'n exploded in my front yard due to faulty ignition wiring. Blew the bumper of my car like 20 feet in front of it. great, 16 years old my life savings gone.
