Green Eyes & Black Rifles

Kyle Lamb, who is a former Special Forces soldier, but a current tactical shooter and joint-owner of Viking-Tactics, wrote this book over several years during his deployments to the sandbox.
It was a lot of fun to read it due to the hail of information’s and the way it was written. This book is made with the AR15 carrying, tactical shooter in mind. But actually this doesn’t matter. In Green Eyes & Black Rifles Kyle is leading the reader into the world of tactical shooting techniques. Basics and advanced.

Do you carry an AR15 type rifle on the job as a LEO or a soldier, or do you own one for self-defence?
Have you never received intensive tactical firearms training like in the SF or on SWAT?
Then I would describe it as grossly negligent if you don’t get a hold of this book and start training. Even as an experienced shooter with a specialized background you will find a lot of hints and tricks in this book that can save your life.
Actually this book was not written for the competition shooter in mind. But if you shoot an AR15 in IPSC or USPSA you will find also a lot of very useful information’s in this book.

Also individuals who do not carry an AR15, but any other type of carbine, battle-rifle, SMG or Shotty will find new tricks and training aids.

Kyle starts out with the selection of the rifle. What barrel length, twist and weight do you want and why. How about optical sights? Which one and why? Don’t forget the iron sights. Reloading techniques. Malfunctions, all of them. Followed by basic marksmanship up to the advanced level. From the correct fighting stance, over the “Broke Back Mountain Prone”, to shooting on the move. Supported shooting, turns, weak hand techniques and terminal ballistics. Of course the right use of a sling. Then you also read about how to prepare for the shoot/no shoot decision, about shooting at night, with and without light, the use of NVGīs and lasers. Weapon transition, Weapon retention, cleaning-tips and finally several pages on how to train the just learned.

That is quiet a lot of material stuffed into 219 pages. Kyle is not telling big tales. He is writing rather short phrases but it contains all you need to know to the dedicated subject.
There are two things I really like on the book beside the tremendous information’s. The first thing is that he is not just explaining the techniques for the right-hander, but also for the south-paw. And he often introduces more then one technique and describes why he prefers a certain technique and not the other. You never have the “My way or the Highway” feeling when reading this book.
I just hope that the material of the book will hold up the permanent into-the-shelf / out-of-the-shelf procedure then there is always a reason to flip it open.
The only thing I could complain about, is that I would rather like to see the approximately 500 photos in color then black and white, like in the book.

Like I wrote before you will find out that Green Eyes & Black Rifles is aimed at the AR15 user. But reloads, malfunction-drills, shooting on the move, weapon transition, just to name a few, concerns all tactical shooters no matter what make and model you carry.

But don’t forget:

You will not become a black-belt by just reading about it!

I hope this review was useful for you.

this guy seems to be delta rather than sf...although he won't admit it:)

Guys, does it really matter if Kyle is Delta or SF? But just in case for those that have to butt sniff in order to buy his book, Kyle Lamm is CAG.

That being said, I have completed this book and definitely recommend this book to any serious rifle fighting enthusiast. This book will cover a little of everything from basics to advance shooters. His experiences are abundant and what he has put down on this book is invaluable. to be truely effective, you still need to send lead down a square range, or better yet, take one of his classes.

In any case that you might wonder if you should buy this book? DON'T even think twice, BUY THIS BOKK< READ IT AT LEAST TWICE and refer back as many times as deem necessary.

It is that good and it is worth every penny.

As far as the reviewer's comments of B&W photos, I have no problems with the B&W photos, but I just wished they were a little bigger in some incidences. Other than that, this book gets a raving two thumbs up from me.

Well said Lee !

I actualy donīt care much if someone was in this or that HSLD unit or not.
More important to me is who he is, what his skills are and if he can bring it on when talking about training.

With almost 20 years of tactical-shooting in Mil. and LE under my belt I can say that this book is for everyone. I know that I will dig out that book quiet often.

cheers,

Gunner

I am ashamed to say I have not read it but I had something better. He trained my team and gave a leadership lecture. He is very knowledgeable and extremly professional. He aslo showed some kick ass videos of hits in Iraq but of course would not let us have them. He talked about Black Hawk Down and the misconceptions about the movie. In conjunction with the lecture was a full day of range work in which he took us through various drills and firing positions.

Has he retired? Still in the Army?

He is retired. You can tell he misses it though. Being in the Unit that he was he had access to information but it's different now. He is no longer in the loop. It's hard to get news about his former peers and friends and what they are up to.

I know the book is for AR15 type carbines, but it says that the lessons apply to other weapons also. Does anybody know how well they apply?

SMGLee

All the various shooting positions and stance will work for other type of weapons.

also some of the ballistics might also be useful when compare to some of the NATO rifles systems.

TheGunner

...yes. And even most of the gun-drills apply to other weapons systems by itīs meaning. You may have to hit a button on a different location on YOUR gun but the result will be the same...know what I mean, Jelly-bean ?

Sorry to dredge up this old topic, but I just saw this book at a local gunstore. Does it focus only on short "carbine" style M-4s or does it also contain some good book learnin' for those of us with the full sized M-16s?

TheGunner

I say it fits to every self loading rifle.
Prone is prone no mater what gun you use (exept a very heavy rifle or a 40rd bannana).
Shooting on the move is shooting on the move. A shorty is a little easyer to handele but a 18" or 20" will do it too.

He happens to use an AR, but, as has been stated, you can use this book for an FAL, AK, whatever. Fantastic book.
