Three U.S. Marines Die in Western Iraq

1 hour, 55 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Three U.S. Marines were killed in action Wednesday west of the Iraqi capital, the U.S. military said.

A statement from the command said the deaths occurred in Anbar province "while conducting security and stability operations." No further details were released due to security, the statement added.

Anbar province extends from the western suburbs of Baghdad and extends to the borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. It includes such restive insurgency centers as Fallujah, Ramadi and Qaim.

As of Wednesday, 796 U.S. service members had died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq (news - web sites) in March 2003, according to the Department of Defense (news - web sites). Of those, 581 died as a result of hostile action and 215 died of non-hostile causes.

It was unclear if the latest deaths were included in that count.

REGIMENTAL PRAYER

Almighty, merciful, and loving Father,
you are the one who hears all our prayers and grants our petitions.

We ask you to remember, as we do,
the tremendous sacrifice made by those who went before us.
They have given their lives so that we might live and breathe freely.
We ask you to receive them into your hands.

Father, give us the strength and wisdom to learn from their example,
to uphold freedom and life at home and around the world.

Keep us vigilant as we guard the frontiers of freedom.

Give our leaders the wisdom and the strength to lead well.

Grant all of us courage and confidence.
Be, for all of us, troopers, a wise counsel in keeping peace
and a strong shield for us against our enemies.
Oh heavenly Father, give us the determination
that the peace and freedom won at such a high price be lasting!

Father, hold all of the troopers in the palm of your almighty hand
and protect them in the shadow of your wings.

Amen.

Al Anbar seems to be pretty intense for the Marines recently, haven't heard much from there besides the tragc casualties that keep being reported though.

Is this connected to the wedding bombing...a revenge act?

Sounds like there could be multiple KIA here.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Three roadside bombs exploded near an American convoy south of Fallujah on Thursday, damaging at least one vehicle, witnesses said.

American troops opened fire after the attack and sealed off the area, the witnesses said.

One witness, Mohammed Jassim, 28, said he saw two U.S. helicopters land at the scene and evacuate casualties.

In Ramadi, west of Fallujah, a U.S. patrol was attacked by rocket-propelled grenade fire early Thursday, witnesses said. They said two U.S. troops were wounded.

American troops returned fire after the attack, and some Iraqis were also hit in the crossfire, the witnesses said.
