Saudi king to organize interfaith conference with Jewish participants
King Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud announces that he will organize interfaith conference involving Christians, Muslims, Jews. Morality, breakdown of traditional values will be among topics up for discussion
Saudi King Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud announced Tuesday that he will organize a series of meetings involving representatives of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths in an attempt to foster dialogue between adherents of the three main monotheistic faiths.
The king announced that his goal in generating this interfaith dialogue is to attempt to prevent the rapid decline in morals and traditional family values rampant in society, and to restore loyalty and caring as guiding principles in our world.
The London-based Arab language publications al-Hayat and al-Sharq al-Awsat reported Tuesday that the Saudi monarch had stated that humanity is currently facing a serious moral crisis. He also noted that he spoke to Pope Benedict XVI regarding these proposed interfaith meetings, and that “the pontiff greeted him at eye level as a fellow human being in a meeting that he will not soon forget.”
Saudi clerics, revealed the king, were also enthusiastic regarding this interfaith conference. “With Allah’s aid, we will meet our brethren of the Torah and the New Testament. Together we will prevent the decay of morality and family values in our society, and replace the contempt and hurtfulness omnipresent in our world with genuine human fealty.”

Hmm.. Sounds good, but it can turn into a event where Saudi Arabia will invite Naturei-Karta or some other ultra-orthodox group that is against Israel, like Iran always does.

I hope he doesn't make that mistake. I can be a great opportunity and have a positive effect if it is no for some "other" reason.
If it is legitimate, I hope it goes very well.

Hmmmnnn..... Fingers crossed.
I've been to so many so called invitations for dialogues here with some guys who claim to have studied comparative religion, mostly Western converts to Islam or the guy is an Arab based in the West where he'll compare the decadence of the West to the failure of Christianity and why Islam is the solution.

Saudi monarch had stated that humanity is currently facing a serious moral crisis.
Maybe it's because some people still derive their morality from bronze age scriptures.

what an arrogant tinpot. while his oil money funds the worst kind of religious extremism (wahabi islam), he holds a conference on 'morals' and 'family values'
echhh..
we do not derive our morals from religion. religion derives its morals from us. it is religion thats causing murder and mayhem in the middle east right now, and this clown has the nerve to talk about morals. he should setup a conference when he stops pumping millions into the jihadists' coffers and bring his Magic Kingdom into the 21st century, and out of the 7th.
A ruler of a nation dictated by barbarian laws has no place to talk about morality and values.

Is it just me or does this sound like the beginings to the "one world global peacefull religion" stuff? If it's done "right" and everyone comes out hugging and happy, what happens next?

I would settle for some half bake tolerance. Sort of, "I hate you, but I won't kill you for it."
I think we have a really long ways before the big faiths set down and sing the Barney I love you song and share cookies and milk with each other.

Agreed.
In Saudi ? - some conference - no booze or chicks...:-( - who'd want to go : :-P
At least in the west, us testament types can get p*ssed and the muslims can call the taxi...

Reminds me of "Click" with Adam Sandler, the Saudis and their "longer bar".

That's too obvious....isn't it?

I would consider such a settlement a huge step for humanity.

Maybe the Jews can attend and do a mass conversion of Saudis...once the locals find out booze is an integral part of worship ceremony....:)

I'm all for peace and understanding between the faiths, but that is a really creepy scenario. :|
I doubt that this meeting will go anywhere.
And even if it does, do people think the extremists will listen ("They are bowing to the infidels/pagans/heathens/Christ-killers/etc!" or some other **** like that)?
But, who knows?

Will these Jewish and Christians spokes men/women be allowed to bring through their Bible's at Saudis airport?

Imagine this. In one of those "dialogues" I attended, I questioned many things about Islam but careful not to offend, after all, I'm in their home court. By the end of the session, I was inundated with invitations and given free books and was even visited in my office. Just so to convince me that Islam is the one true religion.
No dudes, an inter-religious dialogue must be in a "neutral country". Not in the Islamic one. Can you imagine asking an offending question about Islam in Saudi Arabia? Are you kidding me?
...an inter-religious dialogue must be in a "neutral country". Not in the Islamic one...
I would agree, however...is there truly a religion neutral country?

What that would mean is a neutral country for the Abrahamic faiths.
In that case, East Asian countries would be the way to go.
Bhutan would be a good bet. I don't think that there is even a minority Christian/Jewish/Muslim population there.
Plus, the fact that Bhutan usually keeps to itself helps.
