It seems to determine whether civilized area or not.
For example, compare totally vacant area of North Korea with the other
half(South Korea).

Found Honiara in the Solomons, but that's about it... New Guinea was quite anonymous too, but that didn't come as a surprize.
Also Norway was well lit inland too, didn't really expect that...

Hell , I can't see my tiny country .are you serious? Man Israel is clear to see for it’s the lighted part on the Mediterranean
I know Israel is tiny and only has around 6 million people in a region of where there are over 250 million people, but it doesn’t really matter, especially in the middle east for it should be quite easy to spot Israel for its one of the only parts that is all lighted ;) :D
Here for a better view of just a photo of the middle east.
(Israel should be clear to you now :D )
http://www.science.co.il/images/satellite/f/Middle-East-night.jpg
Middle East at Night. Israel appears strongly lighted on the Mediterranean coast. Densely populated areas such as the Nile river and delta, and cities on the Persian Gulf coast are also densely lighted. The vast expanse of the Middle East is dark.
Shalom :D

The North Koreans know how to conserve energy... they are very ecological yei...
Even my country has more light than North Korea and we are less than 300000. Oh well... we've got too much energy to waste.
No civilzation in Jan Mayen!... time for us to liberate it from the "evil" Norwegians...
No civilization on Svalbard.... Novaya Zemlya, Wrangel isle... horrible!
NK seems comparable to Foroye isles... They are about 40000.
