Russia is ready to sell the Kurile Islands to Japan
05/21/2004 19:59
On the eve of the new round of negotiations on the Kurile Islands ownership, the Japanese are conducting wild propagandist campaign in the Russian-language Internet.
Recently the following information appeared on the animation website, "Don"t mix the Northern and Central Kuriles and another group of the islands - the Southern Kuriles. The Northern Kuriles were a part of Russian Empire until 1847, and then they were given to Japan, but the Southern Kuriles have always been owned only by one state - Japan. The four islands of the Southern Kuriles are the sticking point of Russian-Japanese relations (Shikotan, Kunashir, Iturup and Khabomai range), until 1947 the islands were always owned by Japan. By the way, the Japanese Naval base from where the Japanese squadron went to bomb Pearl Harbor, was located in Iturup island".

Meanwhile, Russian political elite seems to be inclined to sell the Kuriles "in exchange of peace". According to Gazeta.ru, "Head of State Duma Committee on International Relations Dmitry Rogozin estimated the Kureles at $2.5 trillion".

According to the Institute of Fishery located in Kamchatka region, warm flow Kurosio and cold flow Oyasio bring enormous quantity of biomass to the Southern Kuriles. This biomass in the form of fish was taken by Russian fishing boat from all the regions of the Far East. This fish helped Communists to avoid regime collapse much earlier than in 1991. There was no threat of famine when tins of the Kuriles fish were in stock of all Russian food-stores. And the source of fish created by the sea flows, is eternal. And it would be stupid to kill the hen laying gold eggs.

Well, in 30-50 years the negotiations on the Russian side will probably be handled by Chinese. Population growth in the Far East of the Russian Empire is already negative, even without the growing AIDS rates. The Kuriles question is just withholding Japanese investments to Siberia.

That makes sense. An issue of national pride, the Japanese may very well fork out the dough.

Waiting for the next special offer from Volodja's Bargain Basement. "Buy old parts of your own country! Closedown sale today only! Everything must go!"

Mind you, areas held by Russia are not considered prime property anymore. Who knows, they may throw in a couple of nuclear submarine wrecks or some other kind of eco-catastrophe.

ha ha 2.5 trilion for stolen land That rusians have a sense of humor

Not stolen. Taken as war booty. Considering the damage and cost to the region caused by Japan it is a minor price to pay. We know for all their attrocities in China and the other countries they occupied they basically got away with.

Stalin joined the fun in Far East late in the game, basically declared war after USA had effectively beaten Japan, only to be able to grab something. That was his game, grabbing stuff from others.

Those islands should have gone to the Chinese or USA, if anyone. Snatching the Kuril Islands was just an early move in the Cold War. Nothing to do with justice or retribution for what Japan had done in China, Korea or Manchuria. It was theft.

Strange then that the SU was so keen to take over the whole of Manchuria after the war. I always thought that was a vital region for China. Btw, why did Stalin decide to enter the Pacific War only after the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima?

You know of the battle of Khalkin Gol when the Japanese tried to invade Russian-held Mongolia? It was a fairly big tank battle and the Soviet troops under General Zhukov were able to defeat the invaders in a troughout fashion. Must have been sometime in 1938/39?

First of all it is some kind of joke. Don't take it serious. Nobody ever talked here about selling this land back to Japan.

Three variants has been considered:
Give it back
Don't give it back
All kinds of shared use for this islands.

Never anyone talked about sale.

I thought that at one point (about 10 years ago or so) there was some talk of selling the region to Germany? Did I imagine this or was it actually talked about?

$2,500,000,000,000 worth of fish? That's an assload of fish. For that kind of money, Japan could create a space program & build a fish hatchery on the moon.

Dunno - there's a $ (US dollar sign) not a ¥ in the story so I assumed...

Russia probably doesn't want to make the same mistake with the Kuriles as they did with Alaska, selling it far too utterly cheaply... wasn't it Tzar Alexander the stupid who did it..? horrible person he was...

And uncle Josef had promised his allies to attack Japan four weeks or something after he'd got Hitler... And then his lads beat the few hundred thousand strong Nipponese Kwantung army in Manchuria with only 6000 something casualties... Sure nice... and took the Kurile eyjar.. jamm...

Well actualy it was easy to defeat since Kwantung army had only light tanks (very few) and very few planes... second to that japs were not willing to fight to much after Khal Khin Gol defeat in 1939... it was KKG where Zukhov emerged as a brilant commander... Aditionally japs were cut of frim suplies from japan since their flet was virtually not existing in june 1945...

Japs can dream all they want.
Russia won't sell.

If they try and take it...Tokyo would become "Staklograd", Russia.
