'Night Stalkers' honor aviator killed in Philippines

Plaque unveiled at Feistner Hall at Fort Campbell

Maj. Curtis Feistner is the latest member of the elite 160th Special Operations Aviation to have a building posthumously named in his honor.

During an emotional outdoor ceremony today, a plaque was unveiled with his name that will be displayed at Feistner Hall at Fort Campbell.

Feistner, a White Bear Lake, Minn., native, was among those killed in action in the early months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He and seven other Night Stalkers were killed on Feb. 22, 2002, during a helicopter crash while conducting counterterrorism exercises over water in the Philippines.

Major Curt Feistner, USMA '90, died on 21 Feb 02 in the MH47 helicopter crash in the Philippines, serving his country in its on-going war on terrorism. Curt's brother Alan is a 1985 USMA graduate and currently serves as the White House engineer. Curt is a true American hero. He had been serving with 160th SOAR for about seven years. He had successfully commanded HHC/2-160th and his regimental commander specially selected Curt to command the new E/160th Company that stood up last year and forward-deployed to Korea. Curt did a great job deploying this new unit to Korea and flying the special operations missions in the Pacific theater. Curt's company was supporting the recent special operations missions in the Philippines.

Curt lived life to the fullest. He was a great friend and role model to all who knew him. He was the utmost professional--a true expert totally dedicated to his country, his unit, his soldiers, and the mission. He trained hard. He ran ironman competitions, triathons, and marathons. He was as tough as any soldier you could find. Curt was a credit to his country and an inspiration to all around him.

The Feistner family is strong. Curt's loved ones are bearing the burden of Curt's loss with dignity. The Feistner family members take comfort in knowing that Curt died doing what he believed in--what he had chosen to do out of love and commitment to a higher cause. Please remember Curt and the Feistners in your thoughts and prayers. The Feistner family is considering a charity to designate for donations in memory of Curt. I will send out an update when the family decides.

... For Victory

As daylight returns
The fires of hope still burn
Crawl throught darkened light
Sickened by the mournful sight
Tears fall from eyes
Not sure what has been done
Sorrow creeps throughout my soul
All is lost, none have won
The battle smoke remains
Begin to feel the pain
Alone now stagger on
Unsure how it begun
Through time war prevails
Thoughts, fears cast aside
Face the consequence alone
With honour-valour-pride
As fire fills the sky
We once believed in life
Now time to die
...For Victory
Now in deaths glory
Mans final destiny
The final price to pay
...For Victory
"They shall not grow old
As we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them"

REGIMENTAL PRAYER

Almighty, merciful, and loving Father,
you are the one who hears all our prayers and grants our petitions.

We ask you to remember, as we do,
the tremendous sacrifice made by those who went before us.
They have given their lives so that we might live and breathe freely.
We ask you to receive them into your hands.

Father, give us the strength and wisdom to learn from their example,
to uphold freedom and life at home and around the world.

Keep us vigilant as we guard the frontiers of freedom.

Give our leaders the wisdom and the strength to lead well.

Grant all of us courage and confidence.
Be, for all of us, troopers, a wise counsel in keeping peace
and a strong shield for us against our enemies.
Oh heavenly Father, give us the determination
that the peace and freedom won at such a high price be lasting!

Father, hold all of the troopers in the palm of your almighty hand
and protect them in the shadow of your wings.

Amen.
