TOKYO (AFP) - Canada survived a second-half fightback by the United States to record a narrow 23-20 win in the four-nation Super Powers Cup rugby tournament.
AFP/File Photo
United States fly-half Mike Hercus missed two penalties in the last minute to put Canada, who failed to score in the second half, into Sunday's final against the winner of Japan and Russia.
Hercus' opposite number Jared Barker was the pick of the Canadians, scoring a try, two conversions and three penalties to help his team to a 23-13 half-time lead.
Barker's third and 13th-minute penalties were matched by Hercus in the 11th and 15th minutes, but Barker then added a third to put the Canadians 9-6 up.
Left-winger Tyler Wish then touched down near the posts after American full-back David Fee was sinbinned in the 20th minute, with Barker adding the conversion.
Hercus pegged back the Canadians with a converted try before Barker beat the US defence to dive over between the posts in the 30th minute.
However, Barker's conversion proved to be Canada's last points of the match as they were pinned down by a gritty United States performance in the second half.
Centre Albert Tuipulotu gave the Americans hope with a try in the 65th minute, which was converted by Hercus.
However, Hercus' two penalty attempts with less than a minute left, both from nearly halfway and close to the left touchline, went wide.

Strange. We usually wallop the U.S. side.
Maybe our all star Charon was too busy playing club in Europe to come to this tournament.

Not to bring up the silly American Football vs. Rugby arguement again as it is incredibly tedious but I figure there are a few thousand college and pro football players in the US that are exceptionally large and fast that might actually do well in the sport of Rugby given the training and incentive to play.

I agree.
But its mostly been working the other way around.
The NFL has been trying to draft Rugby players into their ranks for a while now.
I believe the Oakland Raiders tried to pay Jonah Loumu, close to 16million a season to play for them, but he turned it down and has since retired due to kidney problems.

Doesn't surprise me, he's a great athlete and the Raidahs are unconventional in their hiring practices. NFL players have a different skill set and are probably paid more than the average pro Rugby player which would explain the lack of cross pollenation in that direction. I said average. Plus American Football players are a rather Gung Ho single sport type. Like Marines.

yeh.
it would be easy to get a running back or tight end to play rugby, but it would be much harder to get say the linebackers. theyre big guys, but lets face it. They wouldnt be able to keep up. You get next to no breaks in rugby, and half the defensive line would be out cold before the first side is done.

See, you had to go there.... They train for a specific job in a specific sport. I've played rugby, wing and fly half. I'm too small to do anything else. I played wide reciever in HS. Linebackers today are huge and very fast, as are Corners and Safeties. We aren't talking Offensive Linemen here. Great athletes are great athletes.

Rugby Rules. It is played at a national level more than any sport other than soccer. There is a large rugby following in the US. Many colleges have teams and there are some large tournaments. Two of the power houses here in the US are OMBAC (San Diego) and The Gentlemen of Aspen. Both have won the national title multiply times. More people watched the World Cup final world wide last year than the Superbowl/World Series/NBA Finals and Stanley Cup (which isn't even on regular TV in the US) combined. It's a shame that any sport that didn't originate in the US is seen as inferior.

My point was that if Notre Dame and USC and Miami and Oklahoma and Nebraska etc. suspended their college football programs in favor of Rugby scholarships there would be an unbelievable upswing in US standing in the World Cup.

I wasn't posting this to refute anyones points. I didn't even read most of the sh*t flinging post. It was just my two pence. Many colleges in the US have rugby teams. I know that Stanford, Cal Lutherian, UC Irvine and more colleges back east have rugby teams. It's big in Utah with the Islanders, Los Angeles has a league (played a couple of games and tournaments with Eagle Rock as No.8/Flanker). Each champion of there local league goes on to play the national tournament. All I was saying is that RUGBY RULES!

No one is really **** flinging. My point is the pool of potential great rugby players in the US is drained because of our national obsession with football. I played a couple of years in a Washington DC league. It was fun.

I wouldn't call it an obsession. Just because its the greatest thing ever invented anyhwere at any time and rules over all lesser undertakings with omnipotent might is no reason to call it an obsession.

A friend of mine played rugby, as well as football of course.
He said the rugby guys used to deal with the football players by running away from them for the first ten minutes, and running around them for the rest of the game.
He loved it though, he liked being able to hit someone and then not having to wait to hit them again. With a little more time on the track and less in the weight room he probably would have really gotten into the game.
Now Australian rules football, that looks like fun. Typical Aussie craziness.
