How is the carrier / bag for the m40 gas mask worn on the body? Is it attached to the belt? Also, is there a way to cram a canned filter in there, it does not seem like it will fit. Is the filter stored in the can or on the mask?

The carrier is usually on the left side with three attachment points. Two of the points are connected to the belt and the third is wrapped around the leg. The can is the filter and it is kept attached to the mask in the bag but can be easily replaced by just unscrewing the old unit and screwing in a new one, preferably in an uncontaminated environment.

Mounted folks would have a variation where it would be secured up under the left armpit, where the 2 points would wrap around the chest, one over the opposite shoulder. Looking for a pic.

I spent two years as part of the NBC team for my unit, the second year as an assistant trainer.

I preferred that method when I was in the service - I've never been fond of things hanging on my legs; gas masks, magazine pouches, holsters...

One of my old section leaders showed us how we could attach the carrier to our flaks. We would run the hooks on the waist straps through the grommets on the bottom of our flaks (on the inside at the bottom). The leg strap was around your leg like normal. It was more comfortable since it was attached to your vest instead of the strap digging into your waist and twisting all over when you run. Plus we could get geared up much quicker for QRF.
