can anyone help me with how the tradition of "blousing" the crown of the Australian short-brimmed boonie hat came about?

i have heard that it was done by Australian combat soldiers to distinguish themselves from their fellow soldiers who weren't involved in fighting (desk boys and the like). is this the whole story?

We just did it so we didn't look like bill and ben the flower pot men, I never heard a story as to why it was done.

Don't know about Australian origins of the hat. But in commie Europe this design was used at least since WWII... And afaik it was always like that , it was used by pole fisherman, construction workers and alike... They had short sloped brim aiming downward, they were usually white, it seems they are descendants of marine(not capitalized) hat rather than boonie hat with trimmed brim...

something like this

I don't think thats what he's talking about, the top of the had is pulled up slightly so there is a slight lip on the very top. The hats issued now days looks like an umbrella

Strange,we did something similar with our bush hats in the SADF,ie shape the rim and then the center would be flat, always shaping the bush hat.p-)

Yeah, my 2 issued ones were like a SOMbrella. No sh**. They were massive, and the steel wire brim around the edge mad it ridicolously flat and even to hard to bend. It was an effort to even fit it in the map pocket... I think we used it a few times to play fris-bee, but that's all I've ever used it for after basic.

I went out and bought my own after that. I find the bushat is the only way one can define thier identity in the army. Everyones is different, and after a while it helps out bush because you can pretty much tell who everyone is from far away without even looking at the face sometimes :P

But yeah, fashion is the key. I think this is one case where bigger, definetley ISN'T better...

How exactly do you blouse your hats? Is it as simple as just adjusting it each time you put it on or do you stitch it in place.....or something else.....

I don't know about history or the origins of it, but I do it to mine because the issue hats are deep. They'd be half covering my eyes if I didn't.

There is a definite style to it though. Down to what you have threaded around the edge of the hat to what you're using for a chinstrap. You can tell a lot about a digger just by looking at his hat.

yeah, you needa redo it everytime you put it on, just tuck it down however you like it. only takes a moment
