We were kind of getting off topic on another thread about Baltimore crime. So I thought I'd ask everyone here what city in their respective country is considered to be a s**thole.

Things to consider..
1. Crime
2. Pollution
3. Drugs
4. Police corruption
5. People
6. Beauty

Now having said that I will say my top 3 would be
1. Detroit (was born there and it still looks like Berlin after WW2)
2. Baltimore
3. Philadelphia

yeah...detroit...was watching the news today...insted of demolishing the abandoned buildings down town for the super bowl..they are going to put big sheets over them and sell them as advertising spots...its sad when there are enough abandoned high rises to make that seem like a good idea....

Why the hell is Detroit so stubborn when it comes to tearing down these crack houses? I mean they need to clean the damn place up if they expect to see higher casino revenues. I sure as hell don't want to gamble there... I'll go over to Windsor.

yeah i dont know...someone offered the city 10 million over 10 years to tear them down...but the city hasnt called the guy back apparently...yeah those advertising buildings dont even include the 2 or 3 burnt out...crack house...rundown ratholes on every block...there is a charity i have worked with called blight busters that goes down town and knocks downt he old crack houses...but the city charges them for the houses...damn it just pisses me off...half the people in detroit dont own their house they rent...so they cant do much to improve things...cause its not theirs...if someone does by chance fix up a house...its broken into or torched...cause people dont want other people to have a nicer house then theirs...i had to go down town once...to a warehouse that i was going to be doing some construction on....took a wrong turn...the **** hit the fan faster then possible...i felt like i was in mogidishu....every other street had a road block build on it...all out of old tires...i just spun it in the middle of the street and went 60 mph till i was on the free way again....didnt stop for anything

1st place Ramla and Lod
They pretty much look like the Palestinians cities, maybe a bit more modern and with less people per square meter.
They are full of drugs, they are so full of it that the police sent special units to make curfews on some parts of the city to find drugs. The city budget is very low and many people don't pay taxes, they don't have water because the city didn't pay the water bills (they have water but not 24hours a day), no one comes to clean the trash because the city has no money to pay to a company that will come to take it, there are armed gangs there, it's basicaly the capital of crime in Israel.

Here's what Bully Magazine (http://www.bullymag.com/11.18.03/cities-111803.asp) says...

10. Seattle

Seattle would seem to have everything going for it. Great music, good restaurants, a beautiful landscape, a range of ethnic cultures, and centralized collection of hi-tech businesses that attract brainy folks from places like San Francisco (ever since that city hit the economic slide). So what makes Seattle one of the ten worst cities to live in? Well it's those same techies who fled San Francisco to seek Seattle's venture-capital rich environment, usually after watching the movie Singles, who have turned this once humble and artistic community into a plague of cellphone sporting, PDA carrying idiots who fly around the streets in their Volkswagens while listening to the Flaming Lips. You know that annoying jackass who walks around in the cellphone commercials saying, "Can you hear me now?" He's the official mascot for Seattle. About the only consolation to all this is that Seattle still has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation.

9. Toledo

The first of the Ohio Triplets on our list, Toledo would be the perfect place to re-make The Omega Man. This mostly due to the fact that this Midwestern hole is so bleak, so gray, so devoid of life, that except for rush hour, you wouldn't know that anyone actually lived in Toledo. Forget civic pride, everyone in Toledo knows the city is a hellhole and just stays home to watch TV. Last time we visited, the only after hours joint was located in a hotel for men. Toledo's official city slogan should be "Toledo…We're…well…ah screw it."

8. Los Angeles

If you look at some of the most talented people to ever walk the planet that ended up destroying themselves - Hemingway, Bruce, Belushi, Morrison, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Welles, and yes even Osbourne - all have one thing in common. LA.

7. Salt Lake City

This one should be obvious to any intelligent human: Mormons and lots of them. Need we say more?

6. Cincinnati

If you took Chicago, sucked out every last ounce of culture including its thriving music scenes and quality restaurants and bars, leaving a graying hulk of skyscrapers and a complete lack of night life, then you would have Cincinnati. To some Cincinnati is the greatest city in the U.S. - usually these folks are old, white, Christian fundamentalists, confined to wheelchairs, and are very scared of "coloreds." If you are not this type of person and you live in Cincinnati and like it, you have mental problems and should seek professional help.

5. St. Louis

The "Gateway to the West" has three strikes against it. First is that St. Louis has the highest crime rate of any U.S. city. Second, the main architectural landmark looks like an unfinished McDonald's logo. Third, Bob Costas lives there.

4. Atlanta

Any place nicknamed "Hotlanta" has to suck big time. Here's the catch: Did you ever meet someone who went to New York City and said, "I didn't like it, it was too dirty and oh my God there were all these weirdoes." Usually in the next sentence they'll say, "But I really like Hotlanta, it's so cool down there." That's because Atlanta is the city of choice for suburbanites who don't really like cities. Hence Atlanta has turned into nothing more than an over-sprawled suburb, just with more bad bars.

3. Miami

What can we say about Miami except that it brings out the worst cheesy tendencies in people of all races, creeds, and colors. If you want to see blacks, whites, and latinos at their intellectual lowest, than Miami is just for you. Gaudy neon, bad dance clubs, dopey fashionistas, y'all come back now ya hear!

2. Phoenix

Only an idiot would want to spend most of the year trapped in air conditioning. Such an idiot usually moves to Phoenix. Then this dope will say, "Yeah but it's a dry heat." To make matters worse there is absolutely nothing to do in Phoenix besides run from your car's air conditioning to your house's air conditioning. Or you can play golf. Otherwise, they should tear the whole metropolis down and let it just rot back into the desert.

1. Cleveland

The obvious choice for worst city to live in is Cleveland. Not so much because of the lack of culture. Nor is it the lack of a thriving night life. And it is not the constant economic pall that looms over the city. What really makes Cleveland the worst city in all of America is the fact that it shares many of these qualities with other cities - such as its Ohio Twin, Toledo - and refuses to acknowledge it. As a recent article in the Washington Post pointed out, Cleveland peaked in the 1930s and has been on the downslide ever since. To make matters worse, the Plain Dealer - the local city newspaper - found that the higher a young person's education degree, the more likely said person was to move out of Cleveland. In fact it was one of the only three major metropolitan areas in the 1990s to experience such a mass exodus of intelligence. In essence, smart people leave Cleveland while the dumb stay to crank out children and watch the Indians games. Now if you said this to the average Clevelandite, they would call you an a-hole, pound their fist on the table, and insist that Cleveland has just as much to offer as New York City or Chicago. It's almost as if the citizens have become desensitized to the obvious. At least the Toledoans have a clue, but Clevelandites like their city just the way it is and they're damn proud of it…with the closed steel mills, and bad wing joints, and those horrible blues bands that all play a terrible rendition of "Mustang Sally."

Where are the best places to live in the United States?

Monumental new book ranks cities for desirability

Tuesday, May 18, 2004
By Robert J. Bruss
Inman News

Before you move to a new town, first read the outstanding new book, "Cities Ranked and Rated," by Bert Sperling and Peter Sander. It is sure to open your eyes to considerations most people don't evaluate when moving to unfamiliar areas.

However, if you are looking for the ideal, perfect place to work or retire, this book won't reveal it. Instead it provides cold, hard statistics and lets the reader learn all they can in concise summaries about each city under consideration.

Sperling and Sander explain their book follows the "80-20 rule," focusing on 20 percent of the total places that represent 80 percent of the most popular choices. They rank 331 U.S. metropolitan areas, 27 Canadian metropolitan areas and 45 "emerging" U.S. metropolitan areas.

The rankings are based on composite scores of nine statistical attributes plus one subjective appraisal on quality of life. Then the authors apply compensating adjustments so one bad factor, such as harsh weather, doesn't unfavorably skew the results for an otherwise desirable town.

The nine principal ranking factors are the economy and jobs, cost of living, climate, education, health and healthcare, crime, transportation, leisure activity, arts and culture, and quality of life. Each metropolitan area is ranked in each category, often with wildly varying results.

Based on these criteria, where are the best U.S. places to live? The results will surprise you. The "top 10" are Charlottesville, Va.; Santa Fe, N.M.; San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Santa Barbara, Calif.; Honolulu, Hawaii; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Atlanta, Ga.; Asheville, N.C.; Reno, Nev.; and Corvallis, Ore. Why no Florida towns? Could it be the hot, muggy summers?

Based on the same criteria, where are the worst U.S. places to live? They are Laredo, Texas; Stockton, Calif.; Newburgh, N.Y.; Merced, Calif.; Kankakee, Ill.; Lawrence, Mass.; Pine Bluff, Ark.; Gadsden, Ala.; Anniston, Ala.; and Fort Smith, Ark.

The authors' evaluation for each city is brutally honest, listing the pros and cons of each locality. For example, they praise Charlottesville, Va., as being clean and heavily shaded, with most areas accessible by foot or bicycle, with college amenities. But they quickly mention the high home prices, lack of airline service and rapid growth.

But last-ranked Laredo, Texas, fares poorly in its description. "The Spanish-colonial city center has been reinvigorated following a commercial boom but there is still little to do. At 111 days per year above 90 degrees, the city is one of the hottest in the United States. The Cost of Living Index is low at 77.3, but the city's constant bustle, lack of intellectual stimulation, poverty, high crime rate and heat will try most anyone's patience."

Fortunately, most of the book offers a positive, upbeat note, with lots of fascinating statistics about each city reviewed. Although each city is profiled with its individual statistics, the book is full of interesting rankings, such as best cities for jobs (Billings, Mont.); lowest cost of living (Casper, Wyo.); best climate (Salinas, Calif.); education attainment (Boston, Mass.); healthcare (Rochester, Minn.); lowest crime (Danbury, Conn.); best transportation (San Francisco, Calif.); leisure activities (New York, N.Y.); arts and culture (New York, N.Y.); and best quality of life (Madison, Wis.).

According to the authors, most people don't move primarily for the climate. Of course, they take it into consideration. But Sperling and Sander explain an area's "character" plays a major role in relocations, such as look and feel, activities, services, crime rate, and healthcare availability.

This eye-opener, extremely well-researched book, presented in a very appealing format, should be required reading for any person considering relocating to a new city for employment or retirement. The key information provided in one easy source is priceless.

Chapter topics include "The Places"; "The Rankings"; "The Categories"; "The States"; "Principal U.S. Metropolitan Areas"; "Canada Metropolitan Areas"; and "Emerging U.S. Metropolitan Areas."

Although the cities profiled in this monumental new book will likely challenge their rankings, this factual survey of the best and worst places to live is the most complete and up-to-date. The content presented in easy-to-understand tables and summaries is invaluable. On my scale of one to 10, this outstanding new book rates an off the chart 12. (742 WORDS).

"Cities Ranked and Rated," by Bert Sperling and Peter Sander (Wiley Publishing Inc., Hoboken, NJ), 2004, $24.99, 817 pages; available in stock or by special order at local bookstores, public libraries and www.amazon.com.

it has 4 stations where these trains stop and in every station there are only druged kids.
The city is a "copy paste" city If you are at one part of the city and would and sudenly droped somewhere else you will notice only the streetname changed.... they also have the worst street names like: michel jackson street rofl

2: Urk
this is a smal city that was a island 65 years ago but they still think they are separeted. every person born there is raised with a sigaret and becomes a fisherman. They have rushhour at 1 o clock in the afternoon, because they all go home from work to eat warm at home in the midday.

3: Leeuwarden
It just sucks to live there far from there "real" world....
they ar walking 6 years behind with the rest of the netherlands.
i think at this point they just got there 128K modems installed rofl

4: Amsterdam
Well it got good points, so thats why it's in 4th but those drugs toerists and whores toerist are really anoying (really like to kick them at times ;) ). Also it's a druged place.

Only a retard tries to drive in NYC. There's no reason to given the subway/train system running through the entire city. There are ghettos in every city as well and obviously you've never seen Central Park. As for accents, I know people who find southern accents equally as irritating. Definitely not one of the worst cities in the US.

Yeah, actually Central Park was basically the only green spot besides the grass at Yankee Stadium & Shea Stadium. You don't have to drive through the streets to notice the awful traffic and questionable driving skills that make you wonder how these people passed their driving tests. Besides, NYC has pollution + ghettos written all over it.

Let me guess. You had a bad experience with a transvestite in a tree right? And you felt violated and decided you would never come back?
Good then.
Dont.
Its sure a hell of alot better than Memphis TN.
And like Rat said, Only and idiot would drive in NYC. I take it you tried driving? Idiot.

In Finland there's only one choice: Turku :D

I simply couldn't agree more! :D

However, the books of history tell that the people of Turku have done 3 good things:

1. They burnt the city.
2. They burnt the city, again.
3. They made a road which bypasses it.

Agreed, Turku it is.

Screw you all, Turku is the real capital of Finland p-)

In Poland the worst city is Lódź.
Horrible city with an old awful industrial architecture, true ****hole, the place of the Evil ;)
Ambulance crews were killing people there instead of giving them proper medical assistance and they were doing that just to get money from the funeral industry. Sad but true.

You guys naming Philly is just crazy! What are you scared of Philly? It's the city of Brotherly Love man!.

I wouldn't want to "spend the night on the street" of any North Eastern City but Philly is not worse than NYC or DC in crime, pollution or general decrepitness.

My worst US cities are:

Newark (far worse than Camden)
Pittsburgh (way worse than Philly, NYC or DC)
Detroit
Camden (NJ gets two)
Oakland (I promise - you don't want to spend the night here)
Belle Glade (sounds like it smells nice - NOT)
Any town on the Tex/Mex border

My aunt and uncle live in Sussex which is way up north, and that's a rather nice rural area, alot like upstate NY. But I agree, for the most part the north is a dump (some nice suburban towns in the area though).

Memphis can suck, just like any town, but there are plenty of cool clubs and bars that not everyone knows about--lots of great blues music. You have to know where to look. Memphis isn't one of those towns (like Atlanta) with a Pottery Barn and an O'Charley's on every corner. There's no bottled atmosphere put there by some corporate strip mall.
