WESTPORT, Conn. — Republican Sen. John McCain refused Wednesday to rule out a pre-emptive war against another country, although he said one would be very unlikely.
The likely Republican presidential nominee was asked Wednesday at a town-hall style meeting if he would reject "the Bush doctrine of pre-emptive war," a reference to Bush's decision to invade Iraq without it having attacked the United States.
"I don't think you could make a blanket statement about pre-emptive war, because obviously, it depends on the threat that the United States of America faces," McCain told his audience at Bridgewater Associates Inc., a global investment firm.
"If someone is about to launch a weapon that would devastate America, or have the capability to do so, obviously, you would have to act immediately in defense of this nation's national security interests."
McCain said he would consult more closely and more carefully "not with every member of Congress, but certainly the leaders of Congress."
The Iraq war was in the spotlight this week as Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander there, gave Congress a status report on the war. McCain argues for keeping troops in Iraq to capitalize on security gains, despite a recent outbreak of violence. His Democratic rivals, Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton argue for withdrawing troops.

Did Saddam attack the US? Did Saddam pose a threat to the US?

Invade Iraq without it having attacked the United States. That's the key word.
Did Saddam attack the US? Did Saddam pose a threat to the US?
I believe that was the reasoning at the time.

Did Saddam attack the US?
no - and since when is that the only criteria required to start a war?
Did Saddam pose a threat to the US?
At the time we believed so, yes. Had he allowed the inspections, as he agreed to do at the end of the last war we got dragged into because of him, we might have learned otherwise. Oh well, lesson learned on his part - always follow through on commitments. Next time he'll....oh wait never mind.

"Republican Sen. John McCain refused Wednesday to rule out a pre-emptive war against another country, although he said one would be very unlikely."
And? Sounds like good common sense to me, and if you can find a link to Clinton or Obama saying they "rule out a pre-emptive war" I'd sure like to read it.

A completely irrelevant question normally but, during such a philosophically charged US election along with the incremental enslavement of humanity by collectivists and resultant resistance, it has its uses frightening the ignorant sheeeeeple. Violence is baaaaaaaad. Only baaaaaad people use violence. Look at the proof, his power suit and dark glasses, how he uncaringly bombed women and children from 350000 feet! Now he won’t promise to end the Bush, NEOCON war of world domination. Whaaaaaaaaa…
They’ll keep spinning this melodramatic idiocy; eventually painting McCain into the evil Bush, Neocon corner for about 3% of the US waffle voters, meanwhile poisoning a significant portion of the world’s minds to future diplomatic possibilities should McCain win the executive. If they can't have it, break it.
And, people keep asking me why I say a big nasty war is more possible every day this goes on. Hateful propaganda and manipulating people to stay immature children is baaaaaaad. Pacifying humanity equals enslavement, equals an even worse conflict to come when enough individuals wake up to the tyranny of the collective.
