BNP seeks to bury antisemitism and gain Jewish votes in Islamophobic campaign

ˇ Community groups unite to combat far right threat
ˇ 'Website now one of the most Zionist of all'

The Guardian, Thursday April 10 2008 Article history
Matthew Taylor

The far right British National party is trying to shed its antisemitic past as part of a drive to pick up votes among London's Jewish community. The party, which could get its first seat on the London assembly if voter turnout is low next month, is campaigning in Jewish areas across the capital and attempting to play on what it sees as historical enmity between the Jewish and Muslim communities.
In one leaflet, handed out in north London last weekend, the party's only Jewish councillor, Pat Richardson, is quoted along with a picture of young Muslims holding a placard reading: "Butcher those who mock Islam."
"I'm in the BNP because no one else speaks out against the Islamification of our country," said Richardson. "Being Jewish only adds to my concern about this aggressive creed that also threatens our secular values and Christian tradition."
The move has sparked a furious reaction among Jewish organisations who say the BNP is still antisemitic and racist.
The Board of Deputies, the London Jewish Forum and the Community Security Trust have launched a campaign with other ethnic minority and cultural groups and the Hope Not Hate campaign to combat the BNP threat.
Ruth Smeeth, of the Community Security Trust, said: "The BNP website is now one of the most Zionist on the web - it goes further than any of the mainstream parties in its support of Israel and at the same time demonises Islam and the Muslim world. They are actively campaigning in Jewish communities, particularly in London, making a lot of their one Jewish councillor, their support of Israel and attacking Muslims. It is a poisonous campaign but it shows a growing electoral sophistication."
The editor of BNP newspaper Freedom, Martin Wingfield, wrote on his blog recently: "There has been a growing dialogue between senior members of the Jewish community and the BNP and today there are an increasing number of Jews campaigning for the BNP and feeling very comfortable with their political choice."
Henry Grunwald, president of the Board of Deputies, said the anti-BNP campaign which is being run in conjunction with Operation Black Vote and Sikh and Hindu organisations aimed to underline the antisemitic nature of the BNP and ensure that all voters turned out on May 1 to see off the threat posed by the far right.

"Whatever other sources of anti-semitism there are, we are still very concerned by the threat that comes from the far right," said Grunwald. "Despite all its attempts to portray itself differently we know it is still the same antisemitic, racist party it always was." He added: "We, in the Jewish community, will not tolerate any form of racism or prejudice ... I would be thoroughly ashamed if any member of the Jewish community voted for them."
The BNP's drive to abandon its anti-semitism and cash in on what it perceives to be the growth in Islamophobia was outlined in an essay by party leader Nick Griffin, who once said of the Holocaust: "I have reached the conclusion that the 'extermination' tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely profitable lie, and latter-day witch-hysteria." In his essay last year he wrote: "It stands to reason that adopting an 'Islamophobic' position that appeals to large numbers of ordinary people - including un-nudged journalists - is going to produce on average much better media coverage than siding with Iran and banging on about 'Jewish power', which is guaranteed to raise hackles of virtually every single journalist in the western world."
Nick Lowles, from the anti-fascist organisation Searchlight, which is mobilising voters across the country through its Hope Not Hate campaign, said the tactic of appealing to different ethnic and cultural groups ticked several boxes for the BNP. "It allows them to portray themselves as being non-racist at the same time as legitimising their vicious and sustained attacks on the UK's Muslim communities."

Backstory:
Analysts believe the BNP could make a breakthrough in the May election unless there is a big turnout. Last time London went to the polls the far-right party got 4.7% - a few thousand votes short of the 5% needed to get a member on the London assembly. At the time the UK Independence party, which has since largely imploded, polled 8.2%, and it is feared many of its supporters may now transfer their allegiance to the BNP. The electoral system means the BNP, which has since picked up several councillors in London, needs 5% to get one assembly member, 8% for two and 11% for three. All three mayoral candidates have condemned the BNP. Ken Livingstone said yesterday: "We have to get across one simple fact: there's only one way to stop the BNP, which is by actually going out to vote against them. A low voter turnout will help the BNP get elected."

lulz. The BNP prays off an uneducated white Britsh underclass - something decidedly not Jewish.

Epic fail.

Just out of curiosity, what the **** is 'islamaphobia'?

I think its like Arachnophobia, fear of Giant Islamic insects

The bnp is the UK's biggest waste of Oxygen. I wish I lived in an area they were trying to gain, It would be a great way to galvanise people into voting for ANYTHING other than the bnp

I personally find them so objectionable, I don't even want to give them the luxury of capital letters

I seriously doubt British Jews are going to be lining up to vote for the BNP. They know they are as hated by the far right as by the far left. How transparent can you get!

I dont think jews will vote for the BNP, but at least the party is the only one who recognize the muslim threat to Britain.

Even an Islamic party willing to reduce your female citizens to irrelevance? Hmmmmmm...... 'cause there are a few of them about, even in Britain. Don't let your preconceptions ruin you.

As to the topic, are the Tories the same party as 50 years ago? No.
So why do people consider the BNP of being incapable of slowly modifying itself? The fact that it wants to garner Jewish votes, and regards them as important, should at least give pause for thought to those who haven't even checked their (BNP) election policies.

Speaking as a Jew, one of the things that pushes us away from parties like the BNP is despite us having always a direct threat of extremism on our own communities of such groups that BNP is mentioning, we speak out against them simply because we are against demonizing of cultural groups as it has happened to us in history and sends shudders down peoples spines who have been in the holocaust or have had family members effected.

Then again when the threat is posed against your community by such groups, such that there is an addressed need to constantly have armed guards outside your synagogues and Jewish schools as well as police prescence on high holidays, then people would tend to support groups like the BNP in such cases.

I have no idea how the Jewish community is reacting in the UK however as I'm not from there.

What if upon checking their current policies our preconceptions were shown to be correct that the bnp are indeed a bad joke,or that on a personal level the bnp supporters and member i have encountered have entirely lived up tp their stereotypes as racist cvnts? .

Then that is your democratic right not to vote for them.p-)

But at least you checked.

There is still the problem of the 2 out of touch mainstream party's with their VIP protected, untouched by crime/cultural intimidation MP's not caring about their indigenous majority.

On an interesting side note, the British would not be allowed to vote the BNP in anyway. See Georg Haider of Austria and the sordid undemocratic reaction by the EU.

You do not have the right to vote outside the monopoly/establishment.

Just out of curiosity, what the **** is 'islamaphobia'?

The rabbit the muslums pulled out of their hats when you´re against beheadings, rape of christian underage girls in religious schools or jewish girls, banners like "kill those who insult muhammad", "now you will see the REAL holocaust", "islam will dominate the world", "Europe is the cancer, Islam is the solution". If you feel scared, let alone concerned by this attitude, then you´re an Islamophobic. This way if you express openly your disagreement they put on your forehead the mark of "islamophobia" and single you out of your own multicultural, open, liberal society, until the day they reach enough strength to convert you all or kill you all.

It is a problem that the two main parties dont seem to care much about immigration,by the same token when they are campaigning the bnp don't seem to care about much else immigration is an issue but not a decisive one .

I really dont think that ithe reaction of our European overlords to a bnp victory is ever going to be anything other than a hypothetical issue, not in my life time at least .

The bnp will only attract protest votes in the areas hardest hit by the mismanagement of immigration, they simply arnt a credible political party .

There may be a lot of truth in your statement. However, Britain has never seen immigration like this in the last 1000 years. The political landscape was different then. I'm sure if the BNP listen to the electoral majority and modify some of their views, then they would become quite a serious threat. The current 2 major parties had to start somewhere also, and they are simply quite out of touch with the concerns of a large part of the electorate.

The BNP will also benefit from additional funding if they attract a substantial protest vote.

But of course, I agree with you that this is all a moot point anyway, as you no longer have full control of your political destiny anymore. Ask the Austrians about what happened to them by outsiders when they dared to actually protect the locals from uncontrolled immigration via a democratic election....

Immigration per se was far higher in the direct post-War years, as was unemployment, life expectancy, infant mortality etc. etc.

The majority of British Jews reside within North London. The BNP struggle on all ground, but don't stand a prayer within London. Merely a case of the BNP clutching at straws.

Which Muslims? Not any ones that I know. Every ethnicity has their idiots, evidenced as much by the BNP constituency as by the twats holding those banners.

The fact that the Muslim idiots are against your people specifically doesn't make them any worse than the Christian or Jewish idiots who are against Muslims specifically.

I think that's the whole point of the BNP's argument.

The immigration I was talking about was about peoples who are easily able/willing to assimilate with the British.

As Spinal Tap once observed theres a thin line between stupid and clever the bnp have yet to end up on the right side of the line .

The fact that it wants to garner Jewish votes, and regards them as important, should at least give pause for thought to those who haven't even checked their (BNP) election policies. This is all another attention grabbing stunt by the BNP nothing more, the only Jewish vote the BNP ever got was from a prospective local council candidate who had a Jewish grandmother and running on a BNP ticket, her main gripe was that her kids went to a school full of Indian kids. She failed to get a seat and now refuses to speak to the press.

Storm in a teacup really. The BNP are not serious political players in the UK.
They can get some protest votes in local elections in poor areas that have historically mismanaged by Labour councils but that's about it. When they do get an occasional councillor voted in they soon get 'found out'.

I can imagine that only the most 'eccentric' of Jewish voters in the UK would even give them the time of day.
