Littoral! HA! I really hope that isn't the final name for that series of ship.

cool, I hope Aus gets the contracts. we already supply a few countries with littoral water craft and our SF teams could use some dedicated support in that area, especially the commandos.

We'll fight in close with one 3" gun?
Sure I see a RAM launcher aft (above the Helo hanger), but one gun?
Why not? The aim is not to get in close anymore. If there are boghammers or anything like that around I am sure 25mm and 12.7 mm are carried for close in combat.

looks like a frigate. One gun is all you need isnt it? I doubt the Navy plans on fighting a close naval battle ever again.

correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't you want greater protection from Cole style attacks?

Both versions spec out a 57mm main cannon. With a few .50's for side stuff.
My comment about the 'close fight' was directly linked to the 'littoral combat ship' which is the area close to land (in the Navy's terms). That makes me want some more firepower.
What would happen if the ship was attacked with a fast attack boat with SSM's? It couldn't do anything till it was within 57mm range.

Well, I am curious about this...
What about ASMs? And ASM defense? The 57mm aint going to slice it (I still think the 57mm is not the final gun...but what they are discussing now)
I mean, think about it, they are currently retiring ALL the HARPOON/AAM mounts on our frigates. No CIWS systems works for sh*t on anything other than flat smooth as glass water...
Now you have a ship that is being designed to skirt the coast with a dual mission of surface and anti-sub (designed to go after the super quiet deisel subs). So I can understand the increase in helos...that's smart.
They need a punch though and able to defend from a similar punch...
Here is a similar design, but looks smaller.

how often does any naval ship get attacked in this day and age? I mean seriously attacked as going up against something that could sink it and not a life raft with bombs.

Well, the military always prepares for the worst. But the fact is, any ship (or fighter, for that matter) that tries to come anywhere near a US Navy ship under a hostile pretense will most likely be little more than a hunk of burning steel before it can get its first shot off.
