View Full Version : CIA Special Activities Division and SOGs-still active?

Hey everyone, I have an honest question for anyone willing to answer.

I've been reading a lot about the CIA Special Activities Division in the news since 9/11. While news venues are not the end-all and be-all of sourcing, the articles all seem pretty consistent in the information provided. Various venues such as Jane's Defence Weekly, the Washington Post, the LA Times, ABC News, Fox News, the Telegraph, etc have all indicated that personnel from the SA Div have/are operating in Afghanistan and Iraq. The articles indicate that said personnel are from the CIA rather than the military.

Here's the thing, I have an associate that insists the CIA no longer uses Special Operations Groups and instead uses existing military assets (from SOCOM) much like the Secret Intelligence Service of the UK is said to do with the Increment.

Okay, so, what is the consensus here? Are the news venues mis-informed (wouldn't be the first time)? If so, what is a more credible source of information?

Thanks and take care all.

Thanks Hist2004.

For the initial section, detailing the Special Activities Staff, what is the source? Did I miss it? I admit I just scanned the article and didn't read it carefully, but I didn't see an attribution. Also, how recent is this?

The same for the Doug Waller article. I read his book America's Secret Commandos (or something like that) and enjoyed it. What is the source of this article? How recent is it?

Again, thanks for your contribution.

The initial section was from www.specialoperations.com It's about 2 or 3
years old. The Waller article came from Time.com, it came out in 2002 I
believe.

Thanks for the info, Shrek.

BTW, who would be "we"? If I remember correctly, you are deployed abroad (Iraq, A-Stan?) though I can't remember where or with whom.

When you use "contractors" is it derogatory, complimentary or just a term that is used?

Thanks again. Take care!

We=SF, Afgh.

No, we called them Contractors because as far as we knew they didn't work directly for the Christians, they were contracted through them. Had something to do with rules and regs and the ability to move about unhindered......all I can say bro

Thanks for the info. When you say Christians, is that the term for the CIA? I actually hadn't heard that before. Is there an explanation for that?

Again, thanks for the input. It's much appreciated. Don't mean to keep pestering you with questions but I'm just the curious type.

Stay well!

Yes it's a term used for the CIA that goes back to the 1960's. Prehaps Shrek can provide more details.
