Just watching some series on TV about terrorism and they mentioned Hashasheens. Is this the first organized "terrorist" style organization?* Does anyone know of any earlier ones?

Here is small article that I have quickly found:

At the end of the first Crusades, the Hashashasheen was formed, a Moslem order founded by Hasan as'Sabah, with the headquaters in the mountain fortress of Alamut (Eagle's Nest) in Northern Persia.
The sect is a Shiite order (Shiites made up 14% of Moslems of the time and Sunnis made up 85%) and their primary focus is against the Sunnis.* They Hashasheens believe that all Moslems should share their wealth and live in a state of communism (or at least something very similar to what Marx wrote of as communism).* They believe to accomplish this, they need to put to death all Sunni Islamic leaders, the Turks (who are Sunnis), the Caliph in Baghdad (a Sunni also), and any Shiite leader who is on friendly terms with they Sunni.* They believe the Sunnis are a blight to Islam that needs to be purified.* Their preferred time to strike was also at a time and location where there would be large amounts of civilians around (better shock value I suppose).
The term Hashashasheen came from the fact that they drank a Hashish drink before carrying out their missions.* This term is also the birth of the term assassin (if you can't see the similarity, pull a couple of teeth, drink some whiskey, and try to say assassin* ).
The assassins are given a target, they eliminate it, and then kill themselves (how about that for a recruitment poster..."see the world, kill people, kill yourself...").* To accomplish getting these assassins, Hasan makes his fortress like the Prophet's Paradise, built around a perfumed garden where naked women cater to every whim of the chosen assassin candidates.* After a while, the assassins are given a hashish drink and then removed from this gerden of pleasure.* They are then told that in order to return to the garden of pleasure, they have to kill in the service of the grand master, at which time they will be admitted into the garden of pleasure forever (read the afterlife).
Surprisingly enough, they are so oppossed to the Sunni Moslems thay they become allies with the crusaders.* Richard the Lion Hear met with the grand master on many occasions and arranged assassinations with them, incluidng a hit on Saladin.

There You'll find the genesis of the Assasins and their early history... They were rather not terrorists but more like fanatic drugged ninjas or overmotivated hitmen...

Have you ever met a fanatic drugged ninja? Personally, the one I know acts very similarly to the fanatical jihadist terrorist who lives a few doors down from me. Actually they are best friends, I always see them holding hands walking down the street. Shinji and Ahmed.

Some interesting, though probably exaggerated info about the Hashishins/Assassins...

The story of Hasan bin Sabbah is a tale of ***, drugs, myth, and murder. A secluded mountain fortress, a paradisial garden, poison dipped daggers, and covert political maneuverings are the ingredients of this alchemical mixture, which is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing true stories ever told.

Hasan bin Sabbah - businessman, scholar, heresiarch, mystic, murderer, ascetic, and political revolutionary - was born in Persia (Iran) around 1034. As a child, the man who would one day claim to be the incarnation of God on earth (probably just another way of saying he was Enlightened) was a diligent student of theology.

Supposedly, Hasan was schoolmates with Nizamul Mulk (the future vizier to the sultan of Persia) and Omar Khayyam (the great poet/astronomer/mathematician). These three future luminaries made a pact whereas, if one of them reached a position of power and influence, he would assist his companions.

The secret order that Hasan bin Sabbah created had a significant impact on all subsequent cults and secret societies. During the Crusades, the Hashishins fought both for and against the Crusaders, whichever suited their agenda. As a result, the Crusaders brought back to Europe the Assassins' system, which would be passed down and mimicked by numerous secret societies in the West. The Templars, the Society of Jesus, Priory de Sion, the Freemasons, the Rosicrucians, etc. all owe their organizational efficiency to Hasan. In fact, the Illuminati had their origins in the mystical aspect of the Hashishin order, although most equate the Illuminati with the Bavarian Illuminati, which was a revised version of the Hashishin systemˇ¦ (Tim O'Neill analyzes, in-depth, the influence of the Assassins in Adam Parfrey's Apocalypse Culture)

Our modern day "assassination cults" (the FBI, the CIA, etc.) have incorporated many of the Hashishins' techniques into their methodologies. In a CIA training manual titled "A Study of Assassination", you find traces of the Assassins influence throughout. Hasan Sabbah is even mentioned in the document, which is a must read if there ever was one.

Someone I know traced his history back to the "assasins". They are a fuked up group (as no muslims shall kill another muslim).

but anyways hashasheen in arabic means "those who do hashish/hash. They must of been high all the time.
