I just heard this on the radio. I haven't been able to confirm it but bare with me. In the early 1900s, Capt. "Blackjack" Pershing was stationed in the Phillipines. During this time, agroup of radical muslims were carrying out terrorist attacks on the local population and American troops. Capt. Pershing rallied his troops and attacked a village which was harboring the terrorists. He captured about 50 of them. BEfore executing them, he told his men to dip their bullets in pigs' blood. After executing all but one of the terrorists, there was not a single terrorist attack for nearly 40 years.
Like I said, I haven't had time to confirm this but I thought it was pretty interesting.
