Reporters Released from Captivity

CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq - All members of a four-man television crew were released today after being detained by anti-Iraqi forces more than 48 hours ago while attempting to produce field reports from within the city of Fallujah. The employees of the media organization were released unharmed.

The current level of security that exists in Fallujah poses significant safety risks for Western media. The I Marine Expeditionary Force does not encourage media to conduct unilateral reporting in Fallujah. The societal dynamics of the city and the tendency of its residents to be suspicious of outsiders places any unwitting non-resident who ventures into Fallujah in danger. The crew was apprised of the situation and advised not to attempt access to the city. Despite the advice of I MEF Marines, the crew ventured into the city and was subsequently detained by anti-Iraqi forces.

Under the cognizance of I Marine Expeditionary Force, the Fallujah Brigade facilitated the release of these individuals through local resources and close cooperation with concerned residents of the city who did not wish to see a repeat of the type of mayhem that claimed the lives of four private security contractors March 31.

"The crew's decision to enter the city was irresponsible; luckily it did not cost them or anyone else their lives," stated Lt. Gen. James T. Conway, Commanding General of the I Marine Expeditionary Force.

Possible Peace Deal Reached in An Najaf

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition forces are prepared to suspend offensive operations in An Najaf and reposition to bases outside the city as part of an agreement brokered between Muqtada al-Sadr and Shi'ite members of the Iraqi Governing Council May 27.

The deal, spelled out in a letter from Muqtada to the members, promises the withdrawal of his forces from the city and discussion on the dissolution of the militia as a whole.

Until the withdrawal of militia forces and the return of legitimate civil authorities such as the Iraqi Police Service and Iraqi Civil Defense Corps, Coalition forces will continue to provide security by carrying out presence patrols but will suspend offensive operations.

At all times, Coalition forces will retain the inherent right of self-defense.
