These were the real scene of the roits in Lhsha. You can see from these pictures that who is beating who? The military polices were almost pushed to the corner. If the military polices used the fatal weapons, how could those monks so agressive to attack? The military polices took the very restrained actions to appease the roits.

These pictures were not taken by media. They were taken by local people who then uploaded to the internet.

This pictures was taken in 2001 when the local military policeman played as the actors in a movie shooting. They dressed in the summery uniforms in the picture.

For the roits in Lhsha, you can see from these pictures, they dressed in winter uniforms.

And you can see the local citizens watching them around. Will the police so stupid to do it in public if you wanted to personate the monks??

Actually many of the policemen showed on that pictures have retired already. They are now working with different jobs. They have already stand out to tell the truth.

Here is what I see.... this man is not lunging forward to strike, but rather his whole body is engaged in the motion of pulling the staff away from someone. So much so he's about to fall off balance - backwards - away from the police. A second man has also grabbed the staff. Could they simply be trying to prevent someone behind the police barrier from poking/beating them with it?

I think they are monks, but I believe they are in the act of defending themselves. The man in that photo is clearly engaged from head to toe in the act of pulling that staff away from someone (who was likely antagonizing him with it). His entire body is leaning backwards and away from the police. The monk behind him to the right appears to be crying, the monk behind him to the left looks concerned, a monk in front of him has also reached out to grab at the staff.

In one of the other photos you can see the tops of similar staffs in the hands of the Chinese police behind their barriers.

It would be very easy to have a photographer on standby (clearly the photographer was with the Chinese police, shooting from behind their ranks) with the intention of snapping a misleading photo by beating or poking at a monk with a staff until he grabs onto it to defend himself. *snap* You've got your visual propaganda ready to mislead the unobservant viewer.

How many of the photos came from Tibetan sources? How many from foreign sources? How many from foreign sources?

The one thing I do like about our media is that they compete with each other. Sometimes their personal feelings may impact their work (that's human nature no matter where you are from), but because different media outlets compete with one another you get a clearer picture of the truth by reviewing them all. But when they are controlled by a single, overpowering force... you get spoon fed only what they decide they want you to know/think.

Despite the fact that this Tibet-China stuff is the flavour of the month for the media, I don't dislike the Chinese government in particular for whatever they did in Tibet (I won't take sides there, I don't know the history) but for what they did IN CHINA starting from the Mao era until now.
