Canada reaches quarter-finals of rugby sevens competition in France

BORDEAUX, France (CP) - Canada reached the quarter-finals of the Bordeaux sevens rugby competition Friday, thanks to a helping hand from Russia.
Canada finished 1-2 on the day but joined 3-0 New Zealand in advancing out of Pool A after Russia's 19-14 upset over France. The French needed to beat New Zealand in the last game of the day to edge Canada out for a quarter-final place but were soundly beaten 40-0.
Canada will play England in the quarter-finals Saturday while New Zealand plays Australia, Fiji takes on Samoa and South Africa tackles Argentina.
Stirling Richmond scored two tries in Canada's opening 33-10 loss to New Zealand, a game that was 14-10 for the All Blacks at the half.
The Canadians were then edged 14-12 by France, with Canadian tries coming from Christoph Strubin and Jesse Frender. The Canadians bounced back to thump Russia 33-0 with three tries from David Moonlight and singles from Jim Douglas and Strubin.
