hey gaijin...are those millet sights on your Springfield???

I don't have one, want one, bad :(

gaijinsamurai
04-27-2008, 05:36 PM
Yeah, they're Millets.

When I first bought the Springfield, back in 1987, I had some custom fixed sights put on it. Later, the front sight came of while I was firing it. I wanted to put Trijicons or Wilson Combat sights on the pistol, but as the slide didn't have the dovetail cut, it would have cost too much. The gunsmith (recommended to me by Stuka Jr.) tried like hell to find a front sight that didn't need a dovetail cut, and finally found the Millet.

Great thread,

I am looking to buy my first 1911 and need some advice, I am on a budget but would like some of the extras that are out there, ambi-safety, beavertail, better sights, etc.

I have a budget max at about $650, i have been looking at the;

Taurus PT 1911
Rock Island Tactical 1911

Any body have any experience with these?

A buddy of mine suggested I buy a used standard by a better maker and then purchase and install parts from Wilson Combat, such as the commander style hammer, high ride ambi safety, beavertail, flared magazine well, and better sights?

Is this worth it or should i stick to a cheaper fully loaded model like the Taurus?

A buddy also suggested I look at pawn shops and gun shows for a used SA/Kimber/Wilson Combat but i dont think that i will make my budget with these?

Thanks for the help

Look for a used Kimber or Springfield...I have seen both in good shape for the price you have. Just keep looking and don't settle. Good luck.

gaijinsamurai
04-28-2008, 11:15 AM
Kraut made a good point.
I would love to have a Wilson, but they're simply too expensive. "Wilson Combat" and "Budget" are not compatable!!!!!!

However, like I did, you can get a base Springfield 1911A1 (be sure to get a model with a dovetail cut for the front sites!), then little by little, replace your parts with Wilson Combat or other quality parts of your choice. The options are endless.

Brownell's has an excellent catalog, specifically for 1911A1 pistols.

I would advise you to go with a Springfield Loaded. You will have all the additional features at a much lower cost. I ended up replacing a bunch of stock parts on my Mil-spec myself (including Ed Brown 0.250 radius beavertail safety fitting), and have already spent more than you would on a brand new Loaded. I haven't even changed the sights out yet! It is a good way to go if you want a project pistol, however that was not my initial intention.

I don't think you can get SA's with a dovetail cut, other than the Loaded Models, which are quite within his price range.
I am a huge fan of Springfield's products. I have about 10,000 round through two different SA's, and have never had a single malfunction that wasn't caused by really bad ammo or a damaged mag.

gaijinsamurai

In my opinion, the dovetail cut is an important feature. Without it, your options in regards to custom replacement sights are severely limited-as i found out a few months ago!

Actually, the milspec, is almost a "base" model, and comes with the dovetail cut.

But you pay very nearly as much for a Milspec as for a Loaded Fullsize.

A buddy bought a Taurus 1911 recently. It looks real nice, but in shooting it during matches, he has had boo-coo fails-to-feed using 230gr hardball. It could be rarity, but I wouldn't drop the cash on it. I'd go for known quantity (SA, Kimber, etc.) used, especially if it's going to be a shooter. I currently have only one 1911A1 a Para PXT 1911 SSP. I'll post a photo later.

Some very nice gats out there...

^^^ what he said. Also shop around, look at used too and prviate party sales. If your in no rush, you can figure how the prices run in your A/O and maybe snag a good deal.

There are just a lot of great autos today.

Also, nothing wrong with picking up a extra one later on. The first one can be a very a good learning experience on the firearm. It can greatly help you on your next choice. Basic 1911, are GTG, and you can spend more $$ on a custom one later as you learn what works for you.

Let us know what you buy.

$799 is a lot for a used pistol, but certainly not unheard of. The Custom II is a quality gun.

I had looked up that very page when got home and saw they were basically asking for the MSRP. It did appear to be mint, though. That model is probably what I would get for my first one since I am obsessed with these. One of my dad's is real nice and I'd post a pic I had one. Colt Series 70, Wilson Match barrel, ambi-safety, extended slide release, Pachmayer grips

gaijinsamurai
05-01-2008, 01:01 PM
In my opinion, Gander Mountain should not be asking full retail for a used gun, even if it is in mint condition, unless that model is in high demand and they can't keep them in stock.

If you can get a brand-new Kimber Cutom II, for the same price, it seems like a no-brainer to go for something that's new, in the box, and unfired.

You're dad's pistol seems nice. My plan is to continue to swap out my Springfield's innards with Wilson parts, little by little.

JC0352
05-01-2008, 01:25 PM
They have a whole shelf of new ones, too. I don't remember what the new Custom II was marked at... The Desert Warrior was $1149, I think. That Springfield Operator looks pretty nice, too.

I had went there to see how much they wanted for a Bushmaster, but those seemed too pricey as well. The tricked out S&W M&P15 was only a couple hundred more. I probably won't buy anything before I get the scope for my new elk rifle though, but I a guy can dream.:)

Overall I like the Taurus. I haven't herd of any issues with the safety before now. My only problem with it was that the rear sight was a little off from from the factory and for what ever reason Taurus put red lock tight on their sights so I had to send it back to have them align the sights, now it shoots straight as ever. The gun shoots true and a buddy of mine was able to consistently shoot 3inch groups at 20yards with it and the only feeder issue I have had was because of the ammo I was using and not the gun itself.

In realty and IMHO it's a good gun for the money you get a lot of goodies for the price and it has a lifetime warranty so if you ever do have any problems but just remember you're paying half as much as some of the bigger names when it comes to 1911s and in some areas that shows, like the finish.

Hope that helps.

But you pay very nearly as much for a Milspec as for a Loaded Fullsize.

BTW, I have a SA TRP fullsize, with with some Wilson Combat parts added, and Simonich Gunner G10 grips. I will try to get a picture of it over here. I posted it in the "Post pics of your collection" thread.
here it is.

Thanks for showing your new toy.

I can relate. Since the end of January, I've bought: Glock 30, Uberti single-action .357, AR-15 upper/lower/parts, and my Kimber, plus I paid off my Colt Compact (had been on lay-away with Uncle Hollis), and put a 1946 Marlin .30-30 and a 1957 Winchester .30-30 on lay-away.

There is no cure for us. I get the shakes when I don't have anything coming.

I forgot to list two Stag stripped lowers.

My problem is that I've got all these guns and no time to take them out and shoot 'em.
