If this is about the same weight and length as an Mk.48 LMG, then why don't they just mass-produce that instead of creating a whole new weapon?

Then what does it make M24o so damn heavy and for what purpose? russian MGs weigh nearly the same as MK48s and still are fine

Even if I don't know much about firearms (so imagine about LMG), weight isn't the only issue. If I'm right the Mk48 is used by the SOF and not by the line infantry, so extra care as to be taken to ensure the proper work in "extreme" condition. Mind you that internals might no be made of the same alloys, different heat threatments, tighter tolerances on machined parts etc etc and in the end all these details make a weapon that cost a whole lot more.

The Army SOF has M-240B because the big Army has it. although it is a great weapon, but it is heavy and require more than one operator to carry it into combat. for a small SF unit, this can be a problem.
Since Army has the M240B, the GPMG is free. Ranger brought the M240 into the Big Army shortly after they scrap the M60, and Army later decided to pick up the M240 and make it into the 240B. so Army SOF like the Ranger get the 240 free from the supply chain. if they were to buy the MK48, they would have to pay for it......
the E6 is the result of the big Army's weight reduction program, the PMO have been testing with the titanium receiver since 2000.

there are also the problem with chopper lift capability... you end up cutting out a couple machinegunner in order to get down to the max. lift capacity of a chopper...you think an extra GPMG or two won't make any difference..... till you try to get off the ground....:)

That thing must be at least two times as expensive then a normal MAG. Titanium is about 3 to 5 times as expensive as steel.

Titanium front sight
Sounds like marketing for airsoft guns.
The expense of making the front sight out of titanium is really worth the weight saving of those couple of grams....

Not to mention that Ti is the worst material I machined and it litteraly eats up tooling

The funny thing is, now that they finally dumped the M-60 for the much more reliable M-240, the M-60 has been upgraded to the point where it is about as good as the M-240. Only the SEALs still use the M-60 (as the Mk.43 Mod0).
