Hi,
I need some help here, what kind of walkie-talkie (Or transmitter? I do not know proper designation, sorry.) will you suggest for communication in wilderness where is no coverege of telephone operators (I mean you can not use cell phone (mobile phone))?
It must definetely have range of more than 10 kilometres (7 miles) and some heavy-duty batteries. Something military-grade, no fancy stuff.
Thank you very much.

I assume you want to use it in the Czech Republic or elsewhere in the EU, in which case the only legal kind of "walkie talkie" for you to use will be a PMR446 in the UHF range with a mere 0,5W power. No way you'll be able to reach 10km with that, especially in a forest.

As Beowulf have already suggested the best option would be a satellitphone.

Personally I would choose a Thuraya (http://www.thuraya.com/) over Iridium (http://www.iridium.com/).

The Thuraya phone is cheaper, smaller and got both sat. and GSM.

Maybe it's just me, but every time I use an Iridium it cuts me off after 3-4 min.

The only advantage the Iridium have over Thuraya is that it's world wide, Thuraya doesn't. You can see Thuraya coverage here (http://www.thuraya.com/content/thuraya-coverage.html).

I've been using SGSM lately and it's outstanding.
