Sen. McCain speaks on oil exploration incentives, CAFE
******* (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/07/AR2008050702896.html) (5/8, Gaynor) reports that in a campaign speech on Wednesday, presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said "he would support incentives to encourage states to develop potential oil fields, but would not try to force them to exploit potential resources, especially in environmentally sensitive areas."
McCain said that while he does not believe the U.S. should drill for oil, he said that as "a federalist" he believes "in the rights of states to make those decisions." Sen. McCain said he would attempt to "offer more incentives to states like California and Florida, and more of a larger share of revenues and taxes from oil they may exploit."
The AP (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-mi-mccain-michigan,0,2670993.story) (5/8, Karoub) notes that, also on Wednesday, McCain said that the "answers to fixing Michigan's ailing economy lie not in junking free trade agreements but in retooling the skills of laid-off manufacturing workers." He then "said he supports lower taxes to stimulate economic development," and "voiced his support for a new federal law mandating increases in the corporate average fuel economy."
