A Saddam Souvenir
President Bush keeps the former dictator's pistol at arm's reach
By MATTHEW COOPER

Saturday, May. 29, 2004
When Saddam Hussein was rousted from his spider hole in Dawr, a town near Tikrit, by U.S. soldiers last December, Iraq's fallen dictator was clutching a pistol. He is now in detention at an undisclosed location, being questioned by American authorities and awaiting charges for war atrocities and crimes against humanity. But what ever happened to the pistol?

The sidearm has made its way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Sources say that the military had the pistol mounted after the soldiers seized it from Saddam and that it was then presented to the President privately by some of the troops who played a key role in ferreting out the old tyrant. Though it was widely reported at the time that the pistol was loaded when they grabbed Saddam, Bush has told visitors that the gun was empty—and that it is still empty and safe to touch. "He really liked showing it off," says a recent visitor to the White House who has seen the gun. "He was really proud of it."

The pistol's new place of residence is in the small study next to the Oval Office where Bush takes select visitors after pointing out better-known White House pieces like the busts of Winston Churchill and Dwight D. Eisenhower and a watercolor called A Charge to Keep, which gets its name from a Methodist hymn. The study—the one where Bill Clinton held some of his infamous trysts with White House intern Monica Lewinsky—has become a place where Bush keeps the memorabilia that hold special significance for him. Another of the room's mementos: a photograph of special-forces soldiers in Afghanistan praying after burying a piece of the World Trade Center there as a tribute to those who died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

That's easy to say when you're posting anonymously on the internet. How about manning up and putting your name behind your words, or are you too much of a pussy to do that?

Why don't you spend 100 million dollars and try to run for president in 2008?

Awesome. I have a Lueger .38 my grandfather took off a nazi he blasted 60 years ago at Normandy...still in pretty good shape, though i have never fired it, and im not sure it even would fire, or ever has been fired for that manner.

I think its a cool Bush has this pistol- if people give him trouble, he can just show them this pistol, a way of saying dont **** with us, look what we are capable of.

It's spelled Luger, and the caliber is probably 9x19mm
And how do you know that the previous owner was a nazi? Although he was a german soldier, it does not necessary mean that he was a nazi.

Luger are nice weapons. Accurate also. Just don't use any "hard" ammo in it.

What kind of pistol is Saddam's gun?

I know he had a gold plated MP-5SD and he had a pistol that fired off Cyanide capsules as well...but what pistol did he have on him?

I see nothing wrong with this. Personally, I think Bush should wear it around with a holster to piss off his critics. What a hoot that'll be... The difference between Bush & Clinton. Clinton's "gun" was always loaded and he'd even shoot it off now and then ;)

Not really my buisness, and frankly I don't care, but it is odd that regular soldiers are not allowed to bring souvenirs home from the war, while Bush don't give a damn. Rules are to be followed nomatter where your spot in the chain of command is.

I'm not clear on the policies pertaining to regular soldiers and all. Many gifts such as these are given to presidents, of course they become the property of the United States and a list is kept of who sent the gift and who received it. This is how things of this nature are done.

Many presidents have had war trophys presented to them. They stay in the White House when you leave. (Unless you are like the Clintons who actually tried to take stuff with them :cantbeli: ).

The White House has alot of war trophys in it. Might want to read a little before you start W bashing morons.

What should he have done? Told these respected soldiers "No I can't accept this trophy on behalf of the American people."

Think, then type.

Typical anti-W knee jerk reaction.

Should we give this back too.

http://www.uscg.mil/datasheet/images/Eagle.jpg

Today's Eagle, the seventh in a long line of proud cutters to bear the name, was built in 1936 by the Blohm & Voss Shipyard, Hamburg, Germany, as a training vessel for German Naval Cadets. It was commissioned Horst Wessel and following World War II was taken as a war prize by the United States. On May 15, 1946, the barque was commissioned into U.S. Coast Guard service as the Eagle and sailed from Bremerhaven, Germany to New London, Connecticut.

The president isn't the only one who gets war trophys. In a book about Operation Iraqi Freedom I'm reading it said every battallion (or possibly brigade) got a dozen smaller trophys (an AK47, a bayonet etc) and one large one (a tank, an AA gun etc.) to go in their units musuem. Individual soldiers weren't supposed to take any.

Should Bush have kept it? I don't honestly know. But I can't really blame him for someone else giving it to him. I'm not a big Bush fan, but it doesn't seem like it's his fault that someone gave it to him. Had he asked for it, that might be different, but he didn't ask for it, no?

Have a good one, and just some thoughts...

The reason most of the left wing european metro******s hate Bush is because he is a jingoistic, gun toting, ass kicking cowboy. Thats why i like him- he has the balls to do things that other presidents thought about doing but were never willing to go through with.

Who cares whether it's a gun or not, it's SADDAM'S gun. Would you like to have Hitler's gun displayed in the White House next to the American flag? The White House is for patriotic and meaningful spiritual things, not blasphemous war trophies. Maybe he should donate that gun to a museum instead.

If Bush was Frodo, he'd have kept the Ring and thrown Gandalf in jail. Then Sauron would control the world.

No good will come of this, Bush has cursed us all, he's brought evil into the heart of America. :P

Bush is no cowboy. He's a white collar crook, the figurehead for a corporate mafia that grows fat on embezzled taxpayer $$$ and oil.

That is exactly the problem, Bush is a cowboy - a farmer.
You see, once you grow older, you'll realise that Cowboy (attitude, manners and foremost - intellect wise) in charge is very bad for the country, any country...
Countries should be run chess players, economists, intellectuals and not by farmers.
US is the very good example what happens when a "jingoistic, gun toting, ass kicking cowboy" gets to power...

I undestand that you are going through the puberty process now and above everything else want to be a cool ass kicking cowboy yourself, but...here is a tip for you: cool ass kicking cowboys usually end up in trailer parks, while cool minded people end up driving expensive german cars and having *** with playmates...
