If i'm reading this correctly, this is not the same thing as resigning from his prime minister post. The Fatah movement is just the uprising thing and doesn't necessarily represent the Palestinian Authority on the whole.

Yes, thats how I read it too.... still probably not a good thing for the region.

He is resigning as deputy chairman of Fatah. Disassociation with that organization may erode his power base to enact far reaching reforms even while increasing his political image with the west. Ultimately we know who still influences Palestinian Politics behind the scenes.

Something needs to be done about Arafat. I don't think we'll ever see peace so long as he's pulling the strings. I don't agree with everything the Heritage Foundation says (actually, I disagree with a lot of what they say), but here is a good piece they wrote on Arafat: CLICK HERE (http://new.heritage.org/Press/NewsReleases/NR040302.cfm).
I had some hopes for Mahmoud Abbas (despite his quirks, like claiming that Nazis and Jews were in cahoots in the 1940s), but it looks like he was a flash in the pan.
