Iranian leader: Celebrations won't save Israeli from collapse
TEHRAN, Iran - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Israel's 60th anniversary celebrations are just the last gasp of a dying state.
Iran does not recognize Israel and the Iranian leader has repeatedly called for its destruction.
In remarks Wednesday, Ahmadinejad declared Israel a dying state and said that by holding celebrations Zionists think they can save what he called a "sinister" regime from death and annihilation.
Ahmadinejad used an Arabic word, ismihlal, that can also be translated as destruction, death and collapse.

Thats ok Israel will still continue to celebrate. This rhetoric is obviously meant for internal consumption. He talks tough because that is the only way he seems to have to offend Isreal.

Persians could care less about Israel.
It's the Arab street that he's appealing to.

The Iranian clerical regime is more likely to collapse than Israel is.

true.
Many Arabs already understand that final goal of clerical Iran is not Israel. Israel is rather instrument, image of "the enemy of Islam" playing important role in their efforts to establish shia dominance in the Arab and even whole Islam world.
A lot of people in Arab and Islam world understanding that fear to speak out against Iran as such action would be interpreted as pro-Israeli or pro-US stance.
It's impossible to claim leadership in Islam world without confronting Israel.
So anti-Israeli rhetoric is very well calculated propagandistic method of drawing attention away from Iran's real plan and is intended first of all for the arab world.
Those who are familiar with the history of arab-persian relationship should know that It's very naive to believe that Iranian leaders are willing war with Israel and are ready to sacrifice Iran for Arabs. Persians are known to have very pragmatic thinking even at the first glance they may seem to be clerical fanatics.
Ironically, Ayatollahs in Iran need Israel more than any other country in the world until they accomplish to take over the Islam world.

I agree with Pars and Orbiter, Israel has been useful to the Despots in the ME as a tool to control others. A powerful Iran opens a fracture in the Islamic world, the Shi'ia desire to dominate and control. A powerful Iran is a vehicle to that goal.

Whenever there is a pothole in Cairo that needs to be filled, they blame Israel.
I disagree about Shia domination. Iran is first and foremost a Persian country. They will use and feed proxys at its periphery to secure it soveriengnty. The Shia identity is a tool to influence the Arabs to do the Persian's bidding. The rocket attacks on Israel last year was a means for Iran to win Arab street credibility at the expense of AQ, Wahabbist, Arab Nationalist and Baathist.
But the Persians know thier limits as well and will keep a channel open to Washington D.C. The nukes are a big bargaining chip, for normalization (on equal terms).
