Four Britons escaped a terrifying gun attack on their cars in Iraq that left one man dead, it was revealed tonight.
They managed to escape by flagging down another car and fleeing the gunmen, but at least one Iraqi man was killed in the gunfire.
The four Britons were in a convoy of three vehicles when they came under attack from “small arms fire” at 7pm local time (3pm UK time) in north-western Baghdad, the Foreign Office said.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “The vehicles were immobilised. One Iraqi national was killed in the attack.
“The body has since been recovered from the scene.
“Four British citizens and another Iraqi national travelling in the convoy got out, flagged down a passing Iraqi vehicle and drove away.
“None of the four British were injured or killed.
“The second Iraqi national was wounded but not seriously. All five are now safe.”
Reports had suggested the attackers dragged five or six Western-looking men away from the vehicles during the attack but the Foreign Office believe this was not the case.
The spokeswoman would not give details about who the Britons are, whether they are forces personnel or civilians, what they were doing in Iraq or any other details about the attack.
