Good morning,
My father would like to know the country or has been committed this soldier (see photo) for the genealogy research on it.

http://www.imagup.info/images/05/1188589531_gab.jpg

I know that this picture is rather simple, no strong brand belonging to one country, but we never know.

Period: in the years 1943-1945
The soldier just probably France or Germany.

Thank you in advance for your help.

You must wait a bit Ranger.
The guy in the photo is 100% not German.

What was originally in the lower left hand corner?

May guess is that the person in the photo looks like av member of the French fortress troops manning the Maginot line, though I'm somewhat intrigued why there isn't any grenade patches on the greatcoat collars.
Could it be that the guy was a member of the Milice that collaborated with the Germans in occupied France?
Did Belgian cyclist troops, like those that fought in the Ardennes during 1940, use berets?

More questions than answere's here I'm affraid.

I posted this photo on another forum and a member there identified his uniform (specifically the beret with the coat and bayonet modeled on the German originals) as that of a Nationalist soldier in the Spanish Civil War.

I hope that helps some.

That's interesting. Maybe speak to some re-enactment groups.
