Where is the young fella going to end up and do you reckon he will have a short career like his dad, a long one like his older uncle or pike out like his younger uncle?

If Prince William is anything like Prince Harry, he will end up in rehab.

A lot of the Royals end up in Royal Navy as there us much more distance put between the officers and ratings.

He's the heir to the throne, so whatever he does, he's unlikely to be put into harm's way for long, if at all. His Dad was in the Navy, so that's possible, and apparently his brother might join the Welsh Guards, so the Army is less likely for him.
Don't really care, as long as he doesn't get any special treatment (not that I think he would).

Exaclty. If he joins the army or royal marines, it's not like he's gonna be patrolling in Iraq any time soon.

WILLS TO JOIN THE NAVY

By Dennis Ellam

PRINCE William yesterday poured pigswill over rumours that he plans to become a gentleman farmer - and gave the first real hint he intends joining the Royal Navy.

"There has been a lot of speculation about what I might do next, and I wouldn't rule anything out, but a career in the Armed Forces would seem to be the best thing at the moment," he said as he helped his father out at the Prince's Home Farm, near Highgrove.

"It would mean I would be able to recognise all the hard work that the Armed Forces are doing."

When questioned about the dangers, he added: "Soldiering is a risky business. Today, because of the climate we live in, there are a lot of guys out there putting their lives at risk for all of us."

A spell aboard a Navy ship would allow William to see active service without being singled out as a target. Prince Charles served in the Royal Navy for five years, joining in 1971. And Prince Andrew was a Navy copter pilot in the Falklands.

Last night a Clarence House source confirmed: "In the present climate the Navy looks like William's most likely option. Certainly he can't ever be put on guard duty outside the embassy in Baghdad." Yesterday William and his father were in good spirits as they got down to farm business.

The young prince, particularly - who is spending his summer break from St Andrew's university on the farm - was on good form joking with journalists.

He showed off his tractor-driving skills, shouting from the cab: "Anyone want their lawn cutting, just give me a ring."

And when he went to feed the prize Tamworth pigs, he laughed as a photographer inadvertently touched an electric fence.

"Who got zapped?" he asked. "We turned up the current specially!"

Does the royal family have a current tradition of joining the navy?

Off the top of my head his dad (Prince Charles), one of his uncles (Prince Andrew) and his grandad (Prince Phillip) were all Naval officers.

it's not really a tradition, in the proper sense but I think the post further up about the division of officers and ratings in the navy is the reason why.

My money is on Navy. His dad was plus they'll have more leeway of keeping home out of harms way without appearring as if that's what they are doing. Right? Maybe I'm way off, but that's my perception.

This whole notion of him being a "gentleman farmer" is way off. If he is to be King someday they'll want him to have a service record.

Well William's, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather all served in the Navy.

His Father(Prince Charles) commanded a Minesweeper in the 70's/80's, during his time in the Navy. He also completed the Parachute Regiment's P Company, and has his Para Wings, and is a qualified helicopter and jet pilot.

His Uncle(Prince Andrew) served during the Falklands War.

His GrandFather(Prince Phiilip) served during WWII.

And his Great-Grandfather (King George VI) served in the Navy, and fought at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 were he was mentioned in dispatches.
