Wikipedia says since 1968 the name was VEB Fahrzeug- und Jagdwaffenwerk Ernst Thälmann Suhl (FAJAS). For photos one must first know, where the assult rifles where produced exactly. Suhl is known for gunsmithing(?). Before 1945 there where many different firms there:

- J. P. Sauer & Sohn (founded 1751, now in Eckernförde)
- Simson-Werke (founded 1856),
- Remo Gewehrfabrik Gebr. Rempt Suhl,
- C.G. Haenel Waffen- u. Fahrradfabrik Suhl (founded 1840),
- Heinrich Krieghoff Suhl (founded 1886),
- Fritz Kiess & Co. Suhl,
- Firma Luch & Wagner Suhl,
- Walther Steiner Eisenkonstruktionen Suhl,
- Selve-Kornbiegel-Dornheim AG Suhl,
- Metallfabrik Wilhelm Kober
- Messwerkzeugfabrik Friedrich Keilpart und Co. (founded 1878, in DDR-times: Feinmeß Suhl),
- Waffenfabrik Gebrüder Merkel Suhl (founded 1898).
- there was also important places of weapon production in nearby town Zella-Mehlis ( e.g. Carl
Walther GmbH [founded 1886] or J. G. Anschütz.

Even today Suhl is known for producing sport and hunting rifles. There is also a famous weapon museum.

Was the rifle used by the troops, after the german unification or was it immediately changed by the G3 rifle, used by the Bundeswehr?

Thank you.

Sorry if this is a derail, but I understood that the Iraqi Army were equipped with these. But now I see what look to be all sorts of AK variants in use. Does anyone know the rough composition of their inventory?

There are pictures of Bundeswehr troops using the 5.45mm MPi in the early 90s. I don't know if it was just training with the old system or whether they were issued until more G3s were manufactured though

I remember reading the intro in an old edition of Janes Infantry Weapons (I believe it was the 1992-93 ed.) that the Bundeswehr planned on continuing to use the AK's but apparently the quality was not up to their standards, so the decision was made to dispose of them and use the G3 exclusively.
