Why is evreybody so down on this magazine?. There are only 2 magazines out there devoted to military matters, sof, and the UK very own Combat and Survival, there have been many negative comments regarding Sof mag why is this, I have more often than not found it be good reading material, its not as if there are a whole bunch of magazines out there that deal with such matters as weapon tests, special forces, etc.
I think subscription to SOF magazine has doubled since the events of 9/11, could anybody in the UK tell me where I can find back issues of SOF (issues from late 80/early 90) as I cant be arsed to order them from the States.

I agree Jones, sure you have to take some articles with a grain of salt, but when dont you when dealing with any media. Overall its a great magazine. Its one of the very few mags that deal with a wide variety of different topics that we are interested in.
I picked up a few copies of Combat and Suvival when I was in the UK, thought it was a great mag, wish I could find it in the US. Books a Million used to sell it, but alas no more. Anyone?..

Try combatandsurvival.com, you'll find subscribtion details there.
With regards to SOF mag, at best so-so-ok articles at worst very ignorant. I find it sugarcoated and too much "mom, stateflag and apple-pie".
NOTE to all flamers, I'm in no way denouncing the various individuals or units featured I just don't like the style of SOF mag.
Also at times it tends to concentrate too much about US domestic (political) affairs, NRA, gun-control, etc. I really don't want to read about US domestic politics.

Personally, I'll pick up a copy only if it has serious reporting of recent, unit-level action or rifle reviews with good pics. The old Kokalis gun-test reports were great, but Hackworth is an assinine blowhard - he accused Michael Durant of being a poser in a letter-to-the-editor piece, then bailed out on discussing his opinions in open forum with the CWO, when Durant challenged him. The balance of their editorials and "our sources tell us" commentary smacks of sophomoric grandstanding. Some of the more interesting intel they've recently printed later is proven false in other media-also favorably-focused on patriot and special forces efforts.
It is a rag, however ... I'm glad it's still as readily available as The Nation, World News Press, etc. It's a voice we need out there. Sometimes of dubious truth, often belligerent, but SOF accepts a hefty portion of balancing out the popular, liberal, America-deserves-it, media.
