when they are closing up the plane with the coffins then giving all the facts on who died and what not. There was a poem or a letter sent home in the back ground from a dad to his wife saying, Tell My Children I love them and That i will Be ok and when you tuck them into bed tonight, given them a kiss goodnight from daddy. If anyone knows where I could find the words from that thatd b great!
Thanks! :)

It's been a while since I've watched the movie or looked at the book but if I'm not mistaken, the voice belongs to the character who plays SFC Randy Shughart.

Whether it's fictional or something taken from his death letter, I cannot recall.

There were actually dozen US personnel killed in Somalia. 18 gave their lives during that operation, and Matt died shortly afterwards, but there were others, including an AC-130 crew, Larry Freedman, and several 101st troops.
Have a good one, and just some thoughts...

18 were killed on the mission itself, the 19th was killed in the mortar attack shortly after, so its very common to see both.
im pretty sure the monologue at the end is supposed to be Shughart. if you remember, there's a part just before the battle where he calls home. watched the movie again the other night, ive quit trying to watch the part with Shughart and Gordon, gets me every time.

THE LETTER IS NOT FICTIONAL.....The saying at the end of the movie was taken from parts of an actual death letter that Randy Shugart wrote to his wife and children. Ive seen the whole thing and the movie only shows some of it.

For anyone asking question, READ THE BOOK. It is a really great read. It's so well-written, it reads like fiction, very smooth. It will anwer all your questions about the movie. And when you're done, read 'Killing Pablo,' too.

Yes, the book is amazing. Great read. Literally could not put it down. Stayed up until 4 in the morning to read the end. Had to get up at 6 to go to work. Needless to say, not the most productive day on record.
I've seen Killing Pablo in book stores and I've considered buying it but I never did. Is it similar in structure to BHD? I would assume the writing is similar . . .

Yes, it was Gordon.
If I have a hero that I worship, it is either of those guys. They are, of course, legendary in the SF community. I have shot at their range, trained at CQB in their house and eaten chow in their dining facility. They showed what two men, with the right training and sized balls can do in a bad situation.
Before I left, I wrote a letter (death letter they call it) to my kids and wife. Wow, did that put things in perspective. Just sit down and think about what you want to say to those you love, knowing that it is the last words of yours that they will ever see. Your day will take on a whole new meaning. Just my 2c

Indeed it's where the guy says, "I'm not taking no death letters." "We've got a deal" or something to that extent. :(

I read that sucker (BHD) in 2 days. I literally read it in 2 sittings.
'Killing Pablo' is by the same author (Bowden), so it's a similar structure. He really fleshes the people out. Bowden is a terrific writer. As a writer myself, I really admire him.

12 November 1993
Dear Mike,
I know that Wednesday evening was as difficult for you as it was for each of us. You will never know how much it meant to me to see you face to face and give you a hug. There are so many things I would like to tell you and ask you but I don't want to cause you any more pain or suffering.
When I thanked you for giving Randy's death a purpose I meant it. It is not meant to detract from the bravery or heroism of the others that died, however, I can look at you and talk to you and see that his efforts were not in vain. Perhaps your wife can explain to you what I'm sure she too experienced during those days. When you are a wife in this situation the global and political picture pales and you concentrate only on the one you love and what his immediate isolated situation is. Many people may not understand my feelings and indeed it is difficult to express them accurately. But I am going to try to express them to you.
I want you to know that because of your bravery and refusal to give up while captured I can sleep at night. Your refusal to be defeated and give up was as brave an act as Randy's. Had you given up I would have never known for sure exactly what happened to him. I can live with the fact of knowing he died to save another man rather than had he died from a random bullet shot from a hidden source. If you knew Randy you would know that he was a very quiet and unselfish man. He always put others first and therefore it is fitting and appropriate that he died the way he did. Randy truly loved what he did and had God given him the choice of how to die I know in my heart he would have chosen to go down just as he did. I also know that had Randy been injured in a helicopter you would have piloted a helicopter in to save him no matter how dangerous the situation was.
I don't ever want you to question why you lived and Randy and the others with you did not. You lived to come back and give me some peace of mind to what would have been an otherwise unexplainable situation. You are a living reminder and testament of what the Delta soldiers and those that work with them are all about. The squadron can look to you and know what the beliefs they have and the oath they swear to are valid. Randy and Gordy were not alone when they tried to rescue you. They carried a lot of insight, knowledge and strength from each mate they had ever worked with inside of them.
I want you to enjoy your life and be happy. Look back with pride not sorrow. Just as Randy fought to save you, you fought and did not give up, perhaps not knowing you were fighting to save me...from a tortured mind and heart.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Shughart

Wow. Thats so sad. When I looked at the date before I read it I was like, O! Nov., after he was killed. I thought she was writing s letter to hom to ease the pain but when I saw Mike, I was like, HUH, ooo, Mike Durant, But that letter is very moving

I made the mistake of reading it. I'm at work. I'm tearing up. Jesus but she's a perfect match for a hero. I simply can't imagine making that kind of sense from the death of a loved one. That is fortitude and bravery.
Thanks for sharing, NcDeuce.
