Syria and Turkey are considering creation of a joint energy company and may construct nuclear power plants as part of such a deal, Syrian Oil Minister Sufian Alao was quoted by ******* as saying Friday.
According to a report in Turkey's Antolian news agency, Alao said the two nations will announce the new venture in the coming days.
The new company would search for oil throughout the two countries as well as other nations. "We could also enter into cooperation in the nuclear field. I spoke to [Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi] Guler on cooperation. In the future we could found joint nuclear power plants for electricity production," he was quoted as saying.

great idea to build nucear plants in Turkey with all earthquake background. The Japanese with all their know how have not dealt with that problem efficiently. The same applies for Greece and other Balcan states with strong sesmic zones.

Turkey is planning to build its first nuclear plant in eastern Mediterranean. It will be relatively close to Syria, so a joint plant there with transferring some power to Syria would make everybody in the region happy. Turks will share the cost, Syria will receive electricity, US and Israel will have relative control on Syria's nuclear plans.

However, finalizing such a deal probably would take some years.

indeed very bad idea building any nuclear facility in Turkey due to this region's seismic record

Turkey and Syria to set joint energy company
urkey and Syria are considering setting up a joint energy company and could build joint nuclear power plants for electricity, Syria's oil minister said on Friday.

The two countries will announce the establishment of a joint energy company in the coming days, which could conduct oil exploration in Turkey, Syria and in third countries, the Anatolian agency quoted Oil Minister Sufian Alao as saying.
"We could also enter into cooperation in the nuclear field. I spoke to (Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler) Mr. Guler on cooperation. In the future we could found joint nuclear power plants for electricity production," he said a Turkish-Arab economic forum in Istanbul on Friday.

Turkey's energy minister also said on Friday, that Turkey has been talking to Syria and Iraq to extract natural gas from Iraq's Akkas fields.

"We are planning to carry Iraqi gas through a pipeline right next to the Kirkuk-Yumurtalik oil pipeline. We are holding tri-lateral negotiations with Syria and Iraq to extract and use gas in the Akkas fields, and we hope our talks would yield a positive result," Guler told at the same Forum.

The energy minister said a tender to build Turkey's first nuclear power plant was still open and Arab companies could also submit their offers. "We can work together on that issue, too," Guler told Arab businesspeople.

The general director of Turkish state energy firm TPAO, Mehmet Uysal, was also quoted as saying the two countries had decided to set up a joint energy company and that a deal could be signed by the end of the year, but did not mention cooperation on nuclear energy.

Elaborate.

What is it you would like me to clarify for you? In an earlier thread I noted that there was a distinct lack of questioning the Turkish position. One does not put one's country at any level of risk without reason. At the time I moved on Ehud Yaari's idea that Syria had ceded a border issue to Turkey. But is this enough? It is now clear that the agenda is far more complex and challenging than a border dispute resolution requiring a return of a favour.

As far as I'm concerned, they can build as many plants as they want....as long as the IAEA is allowed to inspect them adequately to make sure they don't have a nasty little side project going on at the same time.

Yeah...I think like that too when I'm on Utopia. However after the flight back to earth skepticism kicks in and I begin to doubt the abilities of the IAEA and its pals the General Assembly of the UN and the Security Council.

Heck, I don't trust the US Air Force with nukes anymore, let alone want to risk proliferation to obvious undesirables.
