Nice article! I seem to remember you on the 25mm thread a little while ago... You seem to have wrapped it all up v comprehensively, handy for people like me who didnt know that, for example, 40mm UGL rounds and 40mm GMG rounds are not the same type!

Those are some very interesting 40mm airburst options. I thought the Striker/MK47 was a new programmable weapon, but the low-cost 'add on' options for fuze setting certainly sound v appealing.

Regarding the ammunition, I didn't know there was a new more effective 40mm round (HEDP?), I wonder if that could be used in the HK UGLs rather than just the six-shot revolver? And its also good to hear of some of the more exotic rounds, such as video recce, as well as HE, AP, smoke, illum. I am sure you must already have researched all the more-usual pyrotechnic options like parachute flares.

Talking of exotic rounds, I believe there is a shotgun round available, that essentially turns the UGL into a shotgun underneath a rifle, which I imagine would come in quite useful for removing door-hinges and the like as well as for anti-personnel use. And I also heard there was a flamethrower round available, but this may be more of a novelty than a useful anti-personnel weapon.

Hmmm, makes me wonder if you can get 40mm incendiary rounds...

The medium-velocity rounds, you mean. Various manufacturers are working on these; I mentioned the MEI Mercury from the USA but Devel is also developing an EXLP round which fires at 200g grenade at 120 m/s, out to 800m. One of the Bulgarian firms (I forget which) have boosted the performance of the LV rounds up to 600m range. The last of these at least should be usable in any LV GL; I'm not sure about the others.

Yes, there are a couple of shotgun rounds in 40mm LV - and a multi-flechette one in 40mm HV.

I've just updated the article with some new info gathered at Eurosatory.

The pic below shows ATK's version of the 25x59B ammo:

Just out of interest, what is the 'Dual Purpose' in HEDP? I googled it and couldn't find an explanation... is it Anti Pers & Armour Piercing?

It's basically a HEAT round with a fragmentation element around the HE to give it some anti-personnel capability as well as anti-armour.

Cheers, nice link!

I thought it was a 40mm shotgun cartridge/slug, but what you linked to is interesting too - a 12 gauge cartridge held within a 40mm chamber... I wonder how it works considering there is no choke in the barrel?

Also liked the look of the multiple .22 adapters. 18 .22 rounds in one go... It would be kind've like a shotgun I suppose, but not so many projectiles and they would be longer ranged... Interesting, wonder what sort of use he has in mind for this? The same AP/hinge removing use as a shotgun, but when the firer is concerned someones going to pop up more than 50 yards away and he still might need to return fire? Or is it just a big toy p-)

Good stuff, wonder what it does to your 40mm barrel though :p

One of our grenadiers had several of the 12 Ga. adapters in Baghdad, no ill effects to the Barrel, and I believe he had the 9rd .22 adapter with some buckshee .22LR's mailed from the States.
