My friend was attacked by 6 teens wanting to take his Ipod. He whipped out his OC and sprayed them but it didn't have desired effect.
There are many OC makers, but which ones are considered top notch? I know that % of OC doesn't matter but SHU rating does.

He did get his butt kicked, but some of the attackers were hurt by him too. He didn't let them get the Ipod. lol

It only works if you get the spray around their eyes. Thats when it really hurts. I use First Defense OC spray while on duty. I'm pretty sure that is Law Enforcement/ Military purchase though. The OC % is 18, so its higher than normal. Most only have 10%. When used correctly it feels like the devil pissed in your eyes. Feels like and extremely painful sunburn, eyes slam shut and you cant open them, nose starts to run, some people have a hard time breathing.

You can go to Galls.com, Officerstore.com or any other places like that who sell pepper/OC spray.

First I'm glad your friend is okay. We issue Defense Technology and it is okay. A bud of mine was exposed to some Canadian stuff called Fox (I think) that he said was absolutely horrible.

OC is really only effective about 75-85% of the time. It will cause some physiological reactions (Lachrymation, immflamation, rhinorea, dyspnea) but the subject's will to fight can carry him through. It is very target specific (eyes primary;mouth nose secondary) and can be defeated by turning the head.

Also certain percentage of people are immune to the stuff.

I had to get sprayed at work, under controled conditions.....I got hit with 5.5 %, and right in the eyes and nose. The words that I could use to describe it would get me susupended, but if you concetrate on the eye, nose, you can slow down some dirtbag trying to ruin your day.

Keep Safe

I don't remember the exact name, i'll get it for you tomorrow, but my dad has some that the first time he tried it, the guy was fighting the burn so bad he sh*t his pants. :|

Fox Labs 5.3 Mil SHU, I believe its 5%, means it doesnt burn as long as say a 10%. But then again 30 minutes vs 2 hours? I mean how long does anyone need to hang around for while BG is incapaciated? You want your OC to hit really hard straight off the bat.

The gear we used basically made us next to useless for about 10 minutes and not much better than that for half an hour, we exposed the whole battalion and attachments over a week and it destroyed everyone. I don't recall the numbers, but they said it was well over what the police were using at the time. Worst half hour of my life so far. :|

How does pepper spray compare to CS gas? Most of us went through a gas chamber at one time or another.

Thought that said macs, not mace for a second

Off topic, but funny. One of the police instructors rubbed a chili around the rims of all the coffee mugs and waited for everyone to get a drink. One of the other instructors happened to get one of the infected mugs and thought it wasn't so funny, he disappeared for about 10 minutes and came back into the room holding a can of OC, walked up to the other instructor and got him right in the face. Apparently the whole room full of recruits ran for doors, windows, any place they could get fresh air.

They found out a couple of seconds later that the instructor that sprayed the OC, had carefully peeled the sticker off and cap off a real can, and placed them on one of the training OC sprays that are harmless. :)

Hope your friend is ok

In my experience OC/pepper spray has much more severe effects - I was physically unable to open my eyes until I'd held my face under cold running water for about ten minutes. CS definitely affected me too, but I was able to work through it.

Thanks all. I'll look into Fox sprays, 5.3 million SHU sounds serious.

I went though the CS chamber in BMQ, and I chose to get OC sprayed for my infantry training, and let me tell you, CS gas cannot even touch OC, is . OC was the most painfull thing Iv ever done.

Why not try some "skunk gas"? I don't know if anything as stinky as that is commercially available, but the skunks produce it in abundance. :D

It's good to hear the guy didn't let them take his IPod and didn't die or seriously get injured from the encounter. Did the police catch his attackers? Why would people want to rob someone of his IPod, it must sell great on Ebay or something :P Are his attackers also bullies? Does he know his attackers? Hope it's not racially motivated.

Thanks for the info on the OC spray guys. I admit it, I was thinking it was on par with CS. Knowledge is power. Go Joe!

CS also can be really painful, it depends on percentage of pure CS in spray, if it's 2,5% or above it's even more painful than OC. Unfortunately such strong CS spray is illegal in many countries, in Germany for example, the highest legal value is 0,5%.

Only OC spray which I've used on street was Sabre Red and It's really good- three guys have had propably very bad night after being sprayed.

Try to get ARM II from a French company called Pierre G.Chimie s.a.r.l.in Paris.
It is a 50ml spray and it helps straight away.
I have btdt a lot unfortunately.
If interested pm me for their adress, phone and fax.

Once I used my whole can of (issue) pepper on some dude that attacked me.
The whole can went straight into his mouth, without any effect. (The guy was lying on top of me and beating the crap outta me)
OC does not work all the time!!

I have seen Fox highly recommended. I will be acquiring a can when I get out of MI. We are limited in how strong a mix we can carry, here. I think what I have is Sabre Red.

as far as OC vs CS, I was unimpressed by the CS I was exposed to in the "Confidence Chamber". It was certainly unpleasant, but I recovered almost immediately upon leaving the room. I got some OC on my hand once (some asshole had sprayed it in a bilge, which I had to crawl around in). an hour or so later, I rubbed at my eye, and "it felt like the devil had pissed in my eye". (that's great, I'm gonna use it every chance I get). I had the heel of my hand clamped into my eye socket, and there was still a stream of tears running down my arm. couldn't open the affected eye for an hour.

Kimber makes a high-velocity pepper-spray gun thingy, iirc. might check that out.

My EDC is, also french, CS Force 80 and I can also recommend it.

It's probably question of concentration, it couldn't be high during training, because CS in big doze can seriously damage your health.

We use First Defense OC spray, i think its about 5.5%, and yeah, it only works 50% of the time, its rubbish imho. I guess the higher ups, dont want to give us to potent stuff, they would rather us get HOD then pay alittle extra for spray that works.

Bring on Taser's I say.

I had the "privilege" of getting gassed with CS (then had to find my way out of a shoot house), and then five minutes later getting hit DefTec OC spray ("Z" patten across the face). I then had to go through all the various ASP baton commands, complete five right and left knee strikes against a guy in a red man suit, then get the same guy to the ground and cuff him. Lets just say it wasn't a pleasant experience.
