I just bought a new Stag Arms carbine upper today. I proceeded to take off the stock ribbed hand guards. I tried sticking the top RAS half on there, but I can only get the front end into the hand guard cap, but I can't get the rear end to seat inside the delta ring. I made sure the direction placement (front/rear) was correct. I asked a few guys locally, and they have no idea why it's not going in. I know the RAS can go on Stag upper, because there was another Stag upper (exactly same) with a KAC RAS installed on it as well. Can you gun gurus give me advise on how to get it in? I stopped since I didn't want to bend the gas tube and break the tabs on the RAS. Thanks in advance.

Your rails are just the drop in replacements for the regular hand guards, right? I suspect that the spring for the slip ring is just really strong if it's a brand new upper; try getting a friend to help you (one of you can work the slip ring while the other paces the rail) or find one of those slip ring tools.

I built an AR a few months ago and had some difficulty putting the regular hand guards on because i had a brand new slip ring. It was just very stiff.

Hope this helps.

One method I have had success with is pushing down on the handguard w/ both hands using your thumbs while your other fingers grab the barrel and push down the slip ring. I usually wind up getting just the corners of the guard over the slip ring. Then I just smack it into place.

Thanks for the help guys. I also realized I was doing something somewhat wrong after I read this:

The clamp's rear legs need to be under the barrel nut. But this is near impossible to do as the spring for the slip ring's really really strong. I've been using the "buddy" system a few times now....but both of our fingers are fatigued. I'll try again soon and keep provide an update.

Mt friend just bought a Stag the other week, it took 3 of us and a screw driver to get the handguards off and back on again, tight little buggers.
Great rifle though.

I'm still really having problems holding back the slip ring...that spring strength is unreal.

From the USMC M16A2 manual: Use the buddy system. That's going to be the easiest way to get it done.

Easier said than done. Me and my buddy's been at this for the last 2 hours. So much for a simple 'drop in' system.

Man, what AR do you have? Mine comes off fairly easy.

Getting the stock ribbed hand guards were easy, it was getting the RAS on that was hard.
Good news, I finally got it in...took a while. The hardest part was just keeping the slip ring further back enough to where I could get the RAS in.
Oh, and it's a Stag upper.

Thanks for the everyone.

And I'm never doing this a second time, lol.

Note to self: Never buy a Stag upper with the intention of putting an RIS on it. Buy a Bushmaster or DPMS.

Well, it's nice to see you finally got it in.

Hahaha, I don't know if other uppers have the super stiff spring on there, as this was the first time I've installed a rail system on an upper. So far, I'm loving the Stag upper. I wanted to get quality parts for this carbine without going broke, and I think I faired ok in doing so.

Yeah, the upper is no doubt a good one. But it was still a PITA to get that RAS on it.

Never took me that long. In 2004 I had to Mount my entire Companies M4 & M16A4's with Rail systems. On average it took me 10 Minutes tops per M4. My Assistant Prepped them while I mounted them.

You can buy that handguard removal tools at Tapco (http://www.tapco.com/proddesc.aspx?Id=04b1d158-d7d7-4691-b3e5-bdc610018bab). I purchased one a few years ago and it works great.

Geezah, yea, I might buy on in the future...as it was horrible doing it by hand without tools. Some guys were telling me that tool messes up/damages the slip ring though.

Linedoggie, then again, you guys knew what you were doing, unlike me. :)
I think tools would have made it a lot easier.

I dunno, I've used mne on 4 ARs and never had any type of issues. They really are worth the $16.

happens.

I had a Colt 6520 and the delta ring was so hard to move back...my buddy was strong, belive me, but couldnt help.

I had to use a handguards remover tool from another friend of mine to do the job.

btw, nice AR! :)

Alright, then I'll definitely buying one in the future...because I'm not putting on another rail system by hand without tools.

Thanks. But once it's on there, it's solid as a rock with no play to the right or left. I'm very happy indeed.

You see those two little teeth that hang down at the rear of the RIS? You have to properly engage them with the groove of the barrel nut. It's a real PITA but you'll eventually get it in there. The lower half goes on much easier!

Yea, exactly. The 'legs' of the part that clamps over the gas tube had to go inside the barrel nut. It was already hard enough to keep the slip ring all the way back in order to do so, lol. Word of advice to others who's planning on installing a RAS on their AR: Get a hand guard removal tool before hand.
