The M96 is a 1901 Carl Gustafs; it is re-arsennaled with a new barrel and stocks.

The M94 is a 1907 Carl Gustafs. I got the bayo from a local doctor.

Look at this 6.5X55 ammo I just got from Samco:

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn163/3crowns_photos/65x55.jpg

It was sealed in 200 round battle packs, but the case surfaces were discolored from corrosion, though the cardboard boxes were pristine...I guess It was sitting and a warehouse and was later re-packed...the headstamp in 1987.

Silverpilar... Good stuff! I gave like 600 of these bullets to my friends dad half a year ago. They still fire ok but they're not exactly match grade anymore. The bullets were however in better condition than the ones in your pic though.

"Norma" also has this caliber. It's pretty common in use here...

When I picked up these from my FFL I also did the DROS for a Husqvarna M38, which is also a like-new Swedish arsenal rebuild. Hell with stamped matching numbers, I'll tale the new bolts and barrels with electric pencil numbers; I wish the M94 was like-new, but I don't think they ever re-arsenalled these. I got all three Swedes on Gunbroker.com; once I discovered the wonderful properties of the Swedish Mauser and the 6.5X55 cartridge, I thought I would not be able to get nice examples! I pity the poor bastards who had to sell these to pay the bills.

I was recently shooting in a 1,000 yard Long Range Tactical class and a friend showed up with an M41 with 4X scope; he did far better all the way out to 1000 while guys with customized M700s in .300 and .300 Win Magnum dropped out before getting to 1K!

Next you need to get the AG42B and you will have the whole set. We have seen a couple of failures of these bolt action rifles locally. The bolt lugs were over hardened and they sheared off. Some sporting ammo is loaded a bit hot for these guns. Many of these guns have been made into sporters in NZ.

That is one thing I don't understand...6.5 is an older cartridge, and was loaded to lower pressures, yet I have heard that modern factory loads can be much hotter, and thus not safe for these rifles. How do I know the difference?

a friendly advise x-ray The bolt lugs for fractures before use,
your eye is on stake if the bolt blows off.

It was only in service for a 100 years...

It's an excellent rifle IMO.

Were you using modern, high pressure ammunition? That's a no-no with the M96. It's best to stick with surplus ammo.

All I can say is the M96 is highly accurate rifle, using some of the best steel ever put to use in a military service rifle. And the 6.5x55mm is one of the best cartridges ever devised.

I like your Swede, Hollis! I'll be scanning Gunbroker for one just like it when my bank account recharges...I've seen some set up like yours there; I guess they were privatley owned by Swedish shooters and customized into target rifles with the pistol grip, aperture sights, flash hiders etc. Though the scoped M41B my friend used in the 1000 yard match is pretty sweet too...

As for the "exploding Swedish Mausers"...I very much doubt that is a common occurance.

That is why I chose the Swedes...The 6.5 is a GREAT cartridge, way ahead of its time.

That's the 6.5 on the left and a 7.62 NATO on the right. The .308 can be one savagley kicking essobee in a bolt-action rifle, and the 6.5 is a pussycat by comparison...and yet, though the 6.5 is loaded to lower pressures and so has a lot less recoil, just look at the ballistic charts and you can see that it matches the .308 at medium ranges and exceeds it at longer ranges, in terms of retained velocity and energy. The Sectional Density of the 6.5 projectile is off the charts, due to its length vs. its diameter.

It is a great round. Who knows how US Combat rifle would have developed if the US would have had developed the 6.5 over the 7.62 NATO.

Husqvarna? I was visiting the "Industy museum" in Huskvarna a year ago...an interesting mix of iron stoves, motorbikes and rifles. I think it was something like 200 different rifles or so....If you by coincidence are passing by...well...it might be interesting

1955: sneak into US Army Ordnance and neck the new .308 cartridge down to 6.5 instead of 7.62....If I ever get a time machine, that will be #1 on my to-do list! If only that idiot Col. Studler had some common sense, just think what might have been...(sigh)

The new 6.5 Lapua is very close to the above dream cartridge (it has a case length of 47mm and is very close dimensionally to the .308 case)...and has been racking up wins in long range shooting competitions...it is the 8th, 9th, and perhaps even 10th Wonder of the Modern World...
