Nice quad...
I imagine skis are pretty high on the list somewhere too. Unconventional operations during a Scandinavian winter must get pretty chilly.
How does the AK5 tend to fare? It is AK47/74-derived, like Rk62/Galil/R1, right? So I imagine it has a reputation for reliability, helpful in unusual climates?

AK5 is bascially an FNC.

No no no it's a Swedish version of the Belgian FN FNC
http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/FNC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ak_5
It's working fine, I have a friend who during his conscript service did't cleaned his weapon during his whole service, along with his platoon, and the rifle did'n broke at all. And he was in for 11 mounths. Sounds like a good weapon, but I don't like it. Too heavy and too hard to clean. But that's just me.
The Swedish special forces, SSG and SIG, both train in winter environment, but the best skills of artic warfare lays with the Army Ranger Battalion.

No it is not related to AK74 in any way. It is a Swedish built FN FNC.

Ah, my apologies! I must've been thrown off by the 'AK', and imagined the RKs that the Finland Defence Force use! Whereas FNC is like FN FAL but 5.56 I think. Thanks for setting me straight!
I suppose there are no 'alpine' or mountain/arctic/extreme cold weather units in your Army, as what would be the point in having these specialised units when your entire Army must be ready to fight in such winter conditions? Must every soldier learn to ski?
But, as someone has mentioned regarding Swedish SF and Rangers, it must take a special sort of person to be able to put up with that level of cold for potentially months, with no possibility of a warm tent even occassionally - as would be the case with these blokes, LRRPs, recce troops etc.
Cheers

Thanks guys, those pics of swedish sf troops were just what i was looking for. Had heard various rumours that swedish sf used the g36 but had not seen any photographic proof. if anyone has any higher res pics of them with the g36 or any info relating to what models are used pls post.

Well FNC internals are pretty similar AK design. Some might even say that they are an improved copy:

Every Swedish soldier learns to ski, all get basic winter/cold weather training, all can fight in winter environment.

Hmmm, Easy... I am Danish and said in respect to the Swedish and Norwegians, we Danes are Notorius for not know back and forward to skies...
A good friend of mine Danish SOF, with more than 20 years SOF experience are properly the best story.
Every year the Danish SOF have to pass a test regarding winter warfare. 4 years ago he passed the course but was stitched up with more than 25 stitches. Danes can not ski, we can fight in very cold and harsh environment, but hell no.... Ski no.

QFT! You really can't! Some, yes. Most of you, NO!

You've never been to the Swedish "fjällen" or what? You're from Östersund so I guess you have but I don't think Danes normally go that far north. Sälen and places like that is overcrowded by them anyway and... Those effing Danes can't ski for sh1t. They slam in to everone and everything. Stops and takes brakes right under a hill crest etc.
Most Danes should NEVER be allowed anywhere near anything that even remotely resembles skis!
Btw: I was considering putting a little pirate smiley to indicate me being sarcastic but then I remembered that I wasn't sarcastic at all!

I know that the Finnish Army trains basically every recruit in ski warfare. IDK about Sweden and Norway, but I think for them it's just the SF who get it.
EDIT: nvm, wiki says this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ski_warfare#Other_information

This can't be. I thought all Norwegians strapped on a pair of skis, donned a lusekofte and went hiking with bestefar in Kjølen every weekend.

Just for any of you who don't know, I think this is Jesper Lindblom, he was KIA in Afghanistan
Might not be respectful in a gear thread.

I can put the skis on the right way, move forward on relatively flat ground without falling on my arse, but point me at a hillside (up or down, don't matter) and i'll probably collapse crying just imagining the broken bones and pain i'm about to face.
But we have to remember there's alot of urban, metro****** semi-poofters coming into the armed forces who've never strapped on a pair of skis and barely seen one (maybe on telly during winter olympics and world championships etc.) p-)
