A phrase often tossed around in ‘gun enthusiast’ circles is “Every serious gun owner should have a .22 LR.” The little pills are cheap to buy in bulk and keep you practicing all day for relatively little money… And practice makes perfect, right? While I wholeheartedly agree with the premise that ‘trigger time’ helps improve your skill regardless of the caliber you shoot, I must admit that I don’t always adhere to the rules. I mean… If I’m going to undergo the task of packing up, getting my wife or shooting buddy to drive 35 miles to the range with me, and clean whatever guns we shoot afterwards – I want to pack something with a punch!
It’s gotta be at least a 9mm with just enough ‘kick’ to be satisfying, right? Sure, I have a great little Browning Buckmark Target model that my wife bought as a birthday gift a few years ago… but up until recently I hadn’t been putting large quantities of .22LR bullets downrange with it. My biggest problem with .22’s is that the reliable ones don’t look cool. Yeah, I know that’s silly – but I guess I just like pulling up to the lane with a big ass ‘hand cannon’ so I can blow holes in paper.
Well let’s just say that between the money we’ve spent getting this site running and the fact that 9mm now costs $200 a case, I’ve been inspired to rethink my shooting habits. I figured if I wanted to get enough trigger time to stay fairly proficient, I would have to involve more .22LR shooting into my routine. I guessed I could stick with this .22 thing if I could fill out my collection with reliable guns that provided a shooting experience similar to their centerfire counterparts. Since I already had a pistol to play around with, my .22 ‘trainer’ needed to be a rifle…Then the fever hit...I was having visions of a kick-ass tacti-cool sniper-type .22 rifle. And thus, my search began.
SELECTION CRITERIA – PICKING THE PERFECT RIFLE
I admit it – my goals for this project were somewhat lofty. It wasn’t that I couldn’t build exactly what I wanted; I would merely have to pay to get everything just right. So, I started out by holding myself to a budget. Okay, it was more like a ballpark number. I settled on $800...Who couldn’t build a .22 for $800, right?

I think it was Budweiser Beer that had a Ruger 10/22 shooting competition. Basically only part that was a Ruger was the receiver. A high quality 22LR target rifle as expensive as any other high quality target rifle. Often caliber is not the issue. Look at the Kimbers.

The only time i nearly had an accidental discharge was with a modified ruger 10/22. The owner took it out of the safe and handed it to us. I played with it for a bit and then cleared it finding out that the thing was loaded.
We can't own there here, but the 10/22 is a nice rifle. The one we looked at had a new stock, heavy barrel and high power scope.

I bought two 10/22 for my kids, we have three of them. The ones I bought had the worse trigger I have ever felt. They were crap. I had to rebuild both trigger assy. It surprised me, because Ruger has a good reputation.
In the past I have been pretty happy with Ruger products. I have my bias about 22, they should be inexpensive. One can never own too many of them. So I can never see a $400 plus 22 LR.

I have a ruger m77mk2 in 223 which i love. Its a cheap rifle but shoots well.
I have a CZ .22 and will only buy CZs, but regard ruger as another "good" brand.
Over here we can't get the semi auto version of the 10/22, only the bolt version. IMO the bolt version is heavy compared to similar rifles. But hey, the magazine system they use cuts down on space.

I wonder if they were the plastic ones StukaJr was bitching about.

No, they were metal, just a extremely poor fit.

Ruger 10/22 was my first rifle. It's heavily modified. Fun shooter.

x2. I got mine for Christmas when I was 16. My mom bought it for $80 at Bi-mart. I can't count the # of times I used to take it out in the woods and pretend I was Christopher Walken in The Dogs of War or Mack Bolan.
10/22 Carbine owner - I've pushed thousands upon thousands of rounds through it without any serious problems. I need to snap a pic for the gun **** thread. :) I sure would like to mod it, but it does the job just fine the way it is. Thinkin bout a new stock though.

The newest model 10/22 has plastic trigger trigger and trigger housing - felt very cheap to me...
I bought a used 10/22 for $200 out the door - installed Clark Custom trigger assembly and hammer, Power Custom shims, bedded the factory stock and XS ghost ring sights and left it at that... Very happy with the results - perfect camp rifle for under $400 after all was delivered and put together.
I'll take some pics of the final set up.

There are still other 22's out there for less. I have a Browing take apart, it is a great camp carbine, or a Winchester pump take apart. Even the Rossis are nice.

My 10/22 is a standard barrelled rifle with a Hogue stock, sound moderator and Simmons low power scope. It's made a mess out of lots of rats.p-)
The trigger of mine is crap. It wouldn't reset after firing and has always had a piece of carboard stuck behind it so that it will.

My custom hogue combo tack driver from CDNN. 10/22's are worth the little extra time and money spent on up grading. The SS 10/22 only has a simple drop in trigger job that shoots night and day better than the original. err edit, the SS does now, not in this pic.

@GaijinKun, Hal Brognola and the guys of Phoenix Force would be laffing at you for using a .22 to take down the mob and commies. No 3 round burst setting to turn foe's heads into fine red mists or split like a ripe melon. ;)

I've been thinking of getting a 10/22 and modding it into a tacti-cool rifle for a while. There is after all a massive amount of after-market parts for it and a stock carbine is cheap.
I've also got a Browning Buckmark pistol i might do something fun with, starting with a after-market weaver scope rail, a cheap red-dot sight and a SAK suppressor with a no-threading QD adapter (the squared Buckmark barrel would probably be a bitch to get threaded, and would include serious lathe work if at all possible)

If I had a 10/22, it'd be modded into this: http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k290/shadowkaton/1022mg42ng0.jpg

Hahaha!! Well, I was only 16 or 17 at the time, so ya gotta give me a break! I didn't upgrade to a Mini-14 until I was 19!
By the way, nice pair of 10-22s, Fork-san!

I love 10/22's, my first rifle. Don't really have a good photo of it but it's on the right in this one

It was pretty satisfying from the factory so I didn't do much, rubber recoil pad to make it longer, metal hand guard, aperture sight. Fun plinker

Bet that big old rifle right next to it gets more range time. Nice Garand too there buddy, and the carbine is nice as well.

Mine is basically stock with just an extended Mag Release and some M16 Style sights(TSR100) for Practicing.
Got it from this place:

like that stock CJ.. i read somewhere that the "flat" range for the .22 was about 250 yards so a real big scope is not really necessary.. truth?

It is not my pistol, but it is nearly an indentical setup. In the photo is a Browning Buckmark Camper (mine is a stainless UDX) with a Tactical Solutions Trail Lite threaded 4" barrel and Gemtec Outback II suppressor. I have already purchased the pistol and TS barrel, and paid for the suppressor. I am just awaiting the tax stamp from the BATF.

not bad. I had look at those Tactical Solutions barrels, but i can't find a Norwegian importer. Self-importation isn't really an option anymore, as the limit is now set at 100 USD, and if it's valued at more than that the exporter needs lots of tedious and expensive paperwork from the US government, and most dealers\makers just don't take the trouble for single orders. :-(

I recommend that you call Tactical Solutions. They are very helpful folks, and may have an importer in Norway they have dealt with in the past. It does not hurt to ask.

Thanks. I would only by Czs in .22lr, i do however want to know how their centrefires go.
You are absoloutley correct, the rifles feel nice, have sturdy actions and a nice trigger, and shoot very well from day one.
Like i said, my fathers CZ/Brno is still going from the 60's.
Whoa, thought this was the .22 thread. Cool still.

Only centerfire rifles I have experience with from CZ are the 550 series. A buddy of mine (StukaJr) has one, and it shoots sweet. The trigger is my favorite part, as it's a set trigger. Damn nice.
