EGYPT EXPECTED TO PROCURE PAC-3 BY 2009

The United States expects Egypt to procure the PAC-3 missile defense system by the end of the decade.
Officials said the U.S. Defense Department and Egypt's Defense Ministry have discussed an Egyptian purchase of the PAC-3 as part of a long-term plan to include Cairo in a U.S.-led effort to protect the United States and its allies against short-range ballistic missiles. They said Egypt has agreed to eventually procure the PAC-3 system, but stressed that this would not take place for another few years.

U.S. Central Command chief Gen. John Abizaid said Egypt will procure the PAC-3 system with U.S. military aid by 2009. Abizaid said the PAC-3 would be one of several major U.S. military platforms that will be purchased by Cairo in an effort to enhance and modernize its military.

"Our objective is to assist Egypt modernize all branches of their armed forces," Abizaid told the House Armed Services Committee. "Annually, we provide $1.3 billion for the procurement of U.S. manufactured weapons systems and support. These include the Patriot PAC-3, Avenger, Stinger Block 1, extended-range MLRS, etc. over the next five years".

And I would say even more so BECAUSE of the military aid from the U.S.

All this just further shows to me how that 1979 "peace" deal was a big mistake, for even without that deal, it wasn’t like Egypt was going to attack anytime soon and in fact with their soviet arms and after the collapse of the soviet union it would have even been much harder, but now they are fully and modernly equipped and well with their hostile population, indeed after mubarek, who knows :roll:

Now yes I belive if they attack, Israel will win, but it will be much harder and we will suffer greater then if they didnt have those modern arms.

Do i think that there are people in Egypt who would jump at the chance to raze israel to the ground? Yes. But do i forsee it happening, absolutely Not. And i dont think providing them with a DEFENSIVE weapons system will pose any threat to israel. Israel already has Patriots and Arrows. Now if it were a SRBM launch system, then i would indeed be concerned. But i think the plan is to give these patriot batteries to as many friendly countries as possible (we already got em in Israel, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Quatar, UAE, Bahrain) to effectively make a missile shield. This way if Iran decides to launch a missile west there will be a good chance that someone will knock it out of the sky.

By the way...some of them with Israeli systems....and the F-16 they sold to UAE with our Helmets...but who cares about UAE..let focos in Egept.

You might be right in regard to how large a percentage, that says the US and Bush is doing a good job in regard to iraq and the middleeast etc.

But in terms of real support from the israeli people and government, I really can't see why Israel should be considered the most supportive one.
