So I bought an M1 helmet for myself. It's pretty nice, but it could use a little touching up (under coat of orange is shining through on the top, liner is unpainted). Does anybody here have a close match to the OD used on the helmet, and a strong paint that won't chip off? Thanks.

This is what I´ve done with my M40.

Ok, here we go.

The complete set (steel pot, liner, woodland camo cover, cat eye band)

Yeah, I could just leave the cover on all the time, but I'd still like the helmet underneath to be completely painted, and the liner still sticks out when you look at it from any other angle than the one I shot it from.

That orange liner is hurting my eyes.
Google a little bit. There are a lot of M1 Helmet sides out there, including restoring, aging tips.

I googled it for a long time, and I came up with nothing. However, my friend just sent me this: http://www.jmurrayinc1944.com/www/refurbishing.htm

Looks pretty promising.

That looks good too, but it's $40 and I have to ship it to them. My helmet isn't that beat up (well there's a dent on the right side but w/e) that I need to send it somewhere, it justs needs a good coat of paint. And the liner would still be that awful orange. But that site has some interesting info, thanks.

Try some Dura-Coat from Lauer Weaponry

Ok, if the paint from Home Depot doesn't work I'll try that. Thanks for all the help guys, but Home Depot offered me the cheapest solution so far: $4 can of spray paint in almost a dead on match. It looks like it'll be a little too wet and hot to do it this weekend, so I'll wait till a nice sunny day and I'll post results. Thanks for all the help though guys, and I'm sure the things you guys gave me will come in handy later on.

J murray is awesome. so is Lawdog steel helmets http://www.lawdogsteelhelmets.com/

a cheap solution that really works well is Krylon green camo paint from Wal Mart. The color is quite accurate. Do you want to restore it to a specific era?

Maybe later, but at the moment I just want it to look decent. Later though, I may want to do some WW2 stuff to it, like changing the straps and the liner.

Also, anybody looking for an M1 helmet, check out this link: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=217712

It's a pretty good deal, and it's a brand new helmet apart from the storage dings.

Depending on what kind of OD you want, check out http://atthefront.com/. Go to US Headgear, and on the Helmet Parts page there's spray cans of early war shade OD for $9.99. Or you could just pick up a can of Krylon OD.

That's pretty funny, because I was just looking at that place when I got that idea and went to Home Depot and got some spray paint (not Krylon, but along the same lines) in a color that's almost a dead match, or so I believe. I'll get some pics up after I've painted it.
