Hi guys,
Supposedly this is taken during British involvement in Oman, I know the Denison was a very common 'ally' item at that time ('cos you know it stopped being ally apparently) but the camo pattern is wrong it almost looks like the Swedish splinter (M90??)
Anyway any ideas would be ace, cheers.
P.s. I do like the way he's carrying an L42 but has an M79 stuffed into his bergan as well.

I believe Silvermans are selling a copy of the 1940 smock.

They do, but if you want a truly faithful replica, Silverman's has one tone of green in the camo pattern which the original never had.
There is a guy in China, though, who does a very nice copy of the windproof uniform.

Is it a faded, well worn Denison?

No mate, it's what Ridgeback said it was - the WW2 windproof smock.

No worries :)
The easiest way to tell is that the Denison smock doesn't have a hood (but does have the "tail" in back). The camouflage patterns were different but, in B&W photos in particular, that's not always easily seen. The attached hood is the ticket though.

Front zipper is another giveaway
It looks like a washed out and very faded British Army smock of the 1950's I notice that he appears to wearing jungle green trousers that tie down at the ankle to keep the creepy crawlies out. Also the rifle appears to a cut down Le Enfield .303 from what can see of it. The wood work appears to have been cut back to make the gun lighter. There a jungle version of the LeEnfield which had the wood work cut back but they also shorten the barrel on this gun. The gun in the picture has kept the barrel at full length for accuracy also the foresight is the same as a LeEnfield. Well that's my thought on the matter

Yeah, it appears to have the heavy barrel etc. Sexy looking piece. Those pics have been posted several times before. I've never seen an ID on the subject but great pics nonetheless. He certainly looks the part...:)

The phots are from the book 'Special Men Special War-Portrait of the SAS and Dhofar' by BM Niven. It's an excellent book, the pictures were all taken by the author. The book had a fairly small print run and is like rockin' horse shyte to get hold of these days.I think I posted some info on Bruce Niven a while back.

The L42 is in 7.62mm Nato. Nice heavy barrel added to it and holds 12 rounds. Unfortunately only a 1000 or so got released on the surplus market. It was the sniper rifle of choice all the way up until the 80s and was last put into service in the early 90s before finally being retired. They are truly awesome rifles, and $1500 is a little cheap for one. I seen them go for over $2000. Too rich for me to justify to my wife alas.
