Got to run a couple of boxes through the new Springfield XD-M in 40 S&W this weekend. For starters I am not a fan of polymer handguns, more personal than practical i have smaller hands and the bulky frames of double stack mags i dont feel i have as solid grip as single stacks. A little background, I have grown up shooting both rifles and handguns and recently re-qualified expert with the Beretta M9 for my annual qual for the SC Army Guard. The new XD-M is good improvment on the initial model. If i were to buy a polymer gun this would be the one.
Likes:
-includes two 16 round magazines
-better sights, three dot; not illumnated but a major improvment over the previous model.
-egronomic texturing to the grip
-interchangeable backstraps, include 3 sizes
-Angular slide
-includes paddle holster as well as larger box
-extended guide rod
-1911 type grip safety
The trigger in my mind leaves more to be desired but it is crisp, and has no creep. It is a vast improvement over other polymer guns i have shot, most notably the main competitor of the XD, the Glock series.
Shot very tight groups at 7, 15, 25 yards using Remington 180 gr. JHP. Of the 200 + rounds put through it, I did not experience a single stoppage.
Overall, this a solid improvemet over the original XD given the improvements in sights and ergonomics. And given the price my brother paid for it of $575 and change, if your looking for an overall carry gun with some nice features to it, this maybe one to consider over the competitors.

I've been wanting to get my hands on one of these for a while...if I move back to a carry state I'll probably get one...
I don't have the money for a kimber...

How to you conceal something that big, I tried my Glock 21, it just shows too much.

good review. I am a huge fan of the XD's. I have a subcompact (3" barrel) in .40S&W, and I had a Tactical-5" in .45ACP for a while. I carry the 3" almost daily. its reliability has been excellent, I have had no maintenance issues.
the XD-M is not currently offered in .45, IIRC. there is a full line of regular XD's in that caliber, though, including a compact model.
I'm particularly fond of the XD-series' trigger. I have not found a better on in a polymer-frame gun.

I don't have extensive experience with handguns, but I shot a few clips out of a XD 9mm, and an XD 45 a few months ago. Man, I could not stand that trigger. It's some sort of safety feature I think, but it gave me some terrible trigger pull compared to the H&K USP 9mm I shot right before.

Oh jeez, once upon a time I asked a Sergeant who had served in the 82nd what the difference between a clip and magazine was. He told me he thought clips held pistol ammunition and magazines held rifle ammunition. He also told me that no one who mattered would give a **** because everyone knew what I would mean.
I'm sorry I made a mistake, but I will get back to you as soon as possible with the answer...
EDIT: "The term clip is commonly but erroneously used to describe a firearm magazine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magazine_%28firearm%29). A clip is used to feed a magazine, while a magazine or a belt is used to load cartridges into the chamber of a firearm.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clip_%28ammunition%29#cite_note-0)"

I carry concealed, and use blackhawk serpa holster, and it is really comfortable, when comapred with fobus holsters. Alot of the guys at work really like the XD. Myself included.

Hmmm... I'll have to ask around how much would this cost here in Croatia... I like it.

I have an XD 9mm. It works well. Good for the money. There are a lot of better pistols out there, but if you want a clean, easy to operate and reliable gun, the XD is GTG.
The design is Croation, based on the H2000 or something like that.

X2. I like my XD .40 but I always find myself grabbing my Glock or 1911. Still a great pistol for under $500.00.
I still want to get some time on the XD-M.

It's funny you should ask. The two I shot said "Made in Croatia" on the side.

Yeah well, the factory where they make them is 50km from where I live. There are ways to get them directly from the factory for a really good price.
