It's useless if that person is hiding behind a NAT in their router.

Here is my NAT IP address: 192.168.1.100

And I'd also like to point out that both those sites mentioned above aren't all that accurate. For my IP it turned up a city 35 km away from here. Pretty weird since there's a city of equal size less than 10 km away from me.

What is NAT?

A NAT works as a firewall built in with the router. So everytime you connect to the internet, people only see your NAT IP address instead of your real IP address.

Isn't that the IP that people will see if they try to access your machine from the net? If you added another computer it would be 192.168.1.101 or whaver else you designate.

192.168 is always a local machine right? Isn't the outgoing IP still visible?

You could Masquerade a number of machines behind one static or dynamic IP but I don't think it will be a 192.168 number visible on the net. It could however hide that your computer is on say the default 192.168.1.100 port.

A router is a good firewall device as it will help stop outside hacks. You changed the default pasword on your router right?

Acutally...no. NAT basically translates different network IPs and ports to one IP for the internet. So it won't change ****. Anyone out there can still see your IP.

This explains it better

NAT Technology
NAT technology translates IP addresses of a local area network to a different IP address for the Internet. Each computer on your network has a local IP address. When the router gets the data transmission to forward out to the Internet, the router puts a different IP address on the transmission. This way, whoever receives the data transmission doesn't know what the actual IP address of the computer is, so the computer is hidden, safe from prying eyes.

But that's not the kind of NAT you've got at home on your router (using the NAT on your router will still keep that router sitting somewhere in your house tracable). This is more like a proxy or a bouncer. Either way; something far away from your own house.

Hence the 192.168 addy, which is not what people will see on the internet.

It is what folks would see after they cracked your router.

Routers at home are still a good security measure, like I said change the default password. Otherwise it is not any sort of security at all.
