"In a handout picture released on the news website of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, four long and medium range missiles rise into the air after being test-fired at an undisclosed location in the Iranian desert on July 9, 2008."

This could have gone in several different forums, I put it here because the intent of the fakery was most likely for political purposes.

So what? An Iranian news agency has used archived photos, this is common practice. There are hours of videos, or are you telling me that those are photoshopped too?

What caught my eye the most was the Shahab missile test, because remembering seeing those same tests back in 2006 and seeing them a lot on the news and forums.

But it doesn't change the fact that they launched at least one missile.

Yes, but it doesn't mean that the missile hit the target, i always amused how they brag about their launches but never show the target hit, wonder why, maybe because they don't know where to put their cameras? :)

I think it would be very difficult simply because the ballistic missiles are in general not very accurate. And even if they do film it, what would you see, a huge explosion in the middle of the desert?

Have reported on this
After Iran's provocative missile test launch on Wednesday, in which the Islamic republic test fired missiles it said could hit Israel, an image surfaced in all the major media outlets, depicting four missiles being fired simultaneously.
However, the French news agency Agence France-Presse, which originally obtained the image from the Sepah News Web site owned by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on Wednesday, later retracted the photo and replaced it with an image containing only three missiles.
The Associated Press also distributed a photo on Thursday that appeared to be almost identical to the one displaying four missiles, without the fourth missile.
In a copy of the AFP advisory obtained by Haaretz, the French organization reported that "a defense analyst said that Iran had apparently doctored photographs of missile test-firings and exaggerated the capabilities of the weapons," adding that the fourth missile was apparently added to cover up a failed launch.
The news agency went on to say that the fourth missile had apparently been created using elements from the smoke trail and dust clouds from two of the other missiles.
After being shown the photograph by AFP, Mark Fitzpatrick of the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies said "it very much does appear that Iran doctored the photo to cover up what apparently was a misfiring of one of the missiles."
"The whole purpose of this testing was to send a signal so Iran both exaggerated the capabilities of the missile in their prose and apparently doctored the photos as well."
AFP also said that several photography experts agreed that the image had been manipulated.
"It's a doctored image," said Gerard Issert, a technician at Granon, one of the largest photo laboratories in Paris, AFP reported.
"Although the missiles weren't all equidistant from the camera, they're the same size in the picture," Issert told AFP in the southern French city of Arles.
Iran defiantly test launched a second round of missiles in the Persian Gulf overnight Thursday. Wednesday's missile display prompted the United States to declare that it would defend its allies at all costs.
Meanwhile, Israel said Thursday it would exhibit an advanced aircraft capable of spying on Iran.

here is a fun thing for those photoshoppers
Use Photoshop to Give Iran Even More Fake Technological Advancements (http://gizmodo.com/5023969/use-photoshop-to-give-iran-even-more-fake-technological-advancements)
So I told you this morning about how Iran made its missile test photos look more impressive by adding another missile using the magic of Photoshop (http://gizmodo.com/5023775/iran-state-media-used-photoshop-to-make-missile-tests-look-more-impressive). Whatever, we can do better than that. You want to impress us, Iran? Let's see some serious tech power. We'll help. Your challege, Gizmodians, is to use Photoshop to create some sweet Iranian propaganda, showing their technological advancements that are heretofore unseen. Create images of Iran showing off its new tech, then send your brilliant results to contests@gizmodo.com. I'll take the best submissions, choose some winners and show off the results in our Gallery of Champions next Tuesday. Get propagandizing!

From CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/07/10/missile.iran/index.html)
(CNN) -- Iran launched only one missile on Thursday, not a new full round of tests, a senior U.S. military source told CNN, citing the latest U.S. intelligence assessments.
Iranian media reported the government fired a series of missiles Thursday in a second day of long-range missile testing.
American radar and satellite data do not back the claim, though it is possible Iran tested short-range missiles, according to the U.S. military official .
The United States believes Iran did fire seven missiles -- including one long-range Shahab-3 -- on Wednesday, as it claimed. The source said one missile failed to launch and the Iranians fired it the following day, U.S. intelligence suggests.
An Iranian (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/Iran) news agency photo showing four missiles fired simultaneously, apparently on Wednesday, seems to have been digitally altered to show one missile in the air that was not actually launched, according to the official.
Iran's Press TV and Fars news agency reported Thursday that Tehran had conducted a second day of missile tests, citing Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Fars said the launches, near the Persian Gulf, were a continuation of the testing that began Wednesday. It said the missiles hit their targets successfully.
The U.S. official, who has access to U.S. intelligence, says one version of a news agency photo appears to show one of the smaller missiles -- an older SA-2 that either failed to launch or was not fired for some other reason -- still on its launcher as three other missiles streak into the Iranian sky.
But in another version of the picture released by the official Iranian news agency, the launcher is obscured by a fourth missile and a cloud of dust, which appears to be a digital composite of two other missiles in the picture.
The tests -- or Tehran's effort to convince the world it was testing -- represent Iran's response to what it says are threats from the United States and Israel. They also dramatize the ongoing saber-rattling between Israel and Iran.

The IRGC said that each missile unit of a certain missile base was given the order for a sudden rapid launch of one example, just the Zelzal series were to be launched in salvo.
For propaganda I'd say reasons those Zelzals were to be launched at once and one of the four launchers malfunctioned or didn’t get their missile ready to launch in time. That’s why later the people at the IRGC website to publish a photo of the promised four at once launch which they faked.
So why the 4th missile didn't fire?
1- It just misfired/technical reason?
2- or they are running out of missiles and need to keep a few just in case they really need to use them?
