Sen. Ventura? Jesse could be getting into Minn. race
The high-profile race in Minnesota between incumbent Sen. Norm Coleman, the Republican, and Democratic challenger Al Franken, the comedian-author-radio host, may be about to get another big contender.
Former Minnesota governor, former professional wrestler and former U.S. Navy Seal Jesse Ventura came pretty close to saying on National Public Radio's Morning Edition today (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92357303) that he's getting in.
Angry about Coleman's support for the Iraq War, Ventura said "that's the reason I run, not to sell books. I run because it angers me." And he said to the people in his state, "all you Minnesotans take a good hard look at all three of us and you decide if you were in a dark alley, which one of the three of us would you want with you?"
Still, as NPR's David Welna reports, Ventura never precisely said during their interview in a St. Paul parking lot that he is going to mount an independent bid for the Senate. Last month, though, he did also drop hints about running to The Midwest Wine Connection (http://www.wineheads.com/pdfs/currentissue.pdf).
It was Coleman who Ventura defeated in 1998 to become Minnesota's governor. He served one four-year term.
Update at 11:05 a.m. ET: As we wrote, Ventura didn't specifically say he was running. And this morning, he's told the Associated Press that he hasn't made a final decision and likely won't until next Tuesday, the deadline to file papers to be a candidate. He was speaking hypothetically when he talked to NPR's reporter, Ventura said. "I gave him the reasons why I would run," said the former governor. "But I said ultimately, it will come down to whether I want to change my lifestyle and go to that lifestyle or not."

I have always like Jesse and was happy to see a “commoner” be elected Governor.
Lately, he has offered his opinion on various subjects and ventures too far into the conspiracy realm for may tastes.

I laughed at first, but then I thought about it. He would be a US Senator and among his colleagues would be crooked businessmen and lawyers, a former KKK member, a bunch of drunken philanderers and cheap hustlers, and several ****** perverts. The Senate chamber may be a cleaner environment than a dark alley, but it's no less slimy.
Still, the idea of voting for Ventura (or Franken for that matter) is just ridiculous to me. I feel gipped that my choices in November will be Obama and McCain. I can only imagine how some Minnesotans feel. That ballot will be surreal.

His tenure as Governor was challenged because he had no consensus among Democrats and Republicans in the State houses. He was also at odds with the press.
But he is credited for the Light Rail project that exceeded ridership expectations. He's also credited for boosting the State's international trade.
Norm Coleman is an opportunist switching parties and positions as he see's fit, he's even ashamed to be called a Republican. Franken is too far left for the rural sector and flakey.
Given the choices, Jessie could win. Unlike his time as Governor, he may have more policy influence in DC and look after his State's interests.

Your post is full of win. And truth. If they gave you an op-ed piece around here instead of these bozo hacks running things there would be more common sense.
Funny, but Ventura won the gubernatorial race 10 years ago for the very same reason - he stepped in the middle of a race between tweedledum and tweedledee and looked pretty good next to the annointed local scions and party hacks.
Honestly, I don't think he could pull it off this time. People are now more inclined to remember his persona and less inclined to remember his accomplishments. The locals seem to think he's creating buzz to sell his latest book and that's about it. I think the latter sounds more plausible.

Perhaps you right.
But keep in mind, that the GOP convention will be in St. Paul (Norm Coleman was it's former mayor). If Jessie were to run for the Senate, he will be a media detractor from McCain and get free national air time for his campaign and views.
Most importantly, he will command the bully pulpit for the independant voters who as fiscally conservative, libertarian in nature and liberal on social core issues. What will be most important are his views about the Iraq war in contrast to McCain. Being a former SEAL gives him alot of credibity on such issues.

The Hiawatha light rail is one of the best no nonsense transportation programs in the country. It connects the Airport, Ft. Snelling VA, Mall of America, Football Stadium and the Strip Bar at the end of the line within 30 minutes.
Jessie wanted to create a commuter train service between the Twin Cities and Duluth. But it did not get traction due to opposition by the farmers. I bet many now regret that decision due to the gas crisis.

Norm is an opportunist, I voted for him last election, and would rather vote for Jesse than him this election. Seriously? A Republican co-authoring a cap and trade bill? Rubbish.
Jesse did not get along with anyone, Reps, Dems, or the media. I believe he would constantly refer to them as "Jackals", which I think is pretty cool. Honestly, I don't think he will be a blip on anyones radar if he does run, and I don't think he will end up running.
The light rail is nice, but honestly it is hardly used unless there is a Vikings or Twins game. If you had to live up here you might join the camp of people like me who would like to see more roads. On a side note, now that the I35W bridge is being built so quickly, we know just how fast the government can actually get something done if they really want to.
Take my word for it, this state and its politics are ****ed up.

I am not sure Ventura could win anymore. He been too hot headed over the recent half a year calling for the overthrowing of the U.S. Government and a new revolution. That stuff tends to look bad on people running for office.

Instead of Minneapolis and St. Paul doing what needs to be done, a big crack down on crime, these cities are going to be ****ed in 5-10 years.
When crime started to go up and people became concerned, the Mayor of Minneapolis called up the Star Tribune and asked them to take out the police blotter. God forbid they actually arrest people and put them in jail.
As long as the ridiculous Ethanol subsidies keep flowing, the rural areas are happy to stay silent. The suburbs are the only places getting pissed because of all the state money being funneled into revitalization projects in the cities. Half of them fail anyways, just further showing government could not operate as a business.

Minnesotans are very unique when it comes to politics. They are socially and fiscally conservative but progressive and libertarian in many ways. (Think of a conservative Lutheran Norwegian) Unlike the two Senatorial canidates who are transplants from other states, Jessie is a local who grew up in that environment.
I think he will represent Minnesota much better than the other two canidates who are more intrested national political affairs than in the locals.

Psst...The police union is the real power in Minneapolis. The mayor is actually part of a "weak" mayoral system in which he gets to strut around like he can do something, but he can't do ****. They've discussed community policing approaches but IIRC officers get double time to even set foot outside the car for a walking patrol in MPLS.
I would put my money on St. Paul being safer in several years, for a lot of reasons. Sorry about the digression.
On topic, Ventura would be yet another breath of fresh air and I would vote for him in a heartbeat.

it will never happen, but I would really like to see a debate between these three. Especially, with Jesse having nothing to lose, he could tear those other two into chunks. I voted for Coleman when Jesse ran, but I would vote for Jesse now. At least he wouldn't be as damn boring as the typical politician.
I have thought that lately Jesse looked a little shaky, like he had some type of tremor.
Ventura is a f-ing idiot.
He claims 911 was staged by US gov...
His MAIN point is....and I quote...
"If you put a can of beans on a grill over a camp fire.....the fire in a 1000 years wont be able to make the can of beans fall through a heat weaked grill"
He claims US planted explosives in WTC
:retard:
^ could I get some links plz that explicitly say he thinks the US government was responsible for 9/11? out of curiosity

I will try my best to find you something.
It was a radio talk show Mr Ventura was a guest on that day....about a 10 min interview.
I like the man.... his line in Predator, "He's dug in deeper than an Alabama Tick" was brilliantly done.
;)

LMAO @ comparing a can of beans on a grill to WTC fire.
He also said that 911 was an inside job on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

In 2003, Landham ran in the Republican Party primary election for the post of Governor of Kentucky.
In January 2004, Landham announced his candidacy for the 27th State Senate District of Kentucky.
On June 25, 2008, Landham announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Mitch McConnell on the Libertarian line.
