A question for those of you out there with experience with backpacks. I have new pack and it has a lot of slack on some of the straps, making for a quite unsightly appreance.
Generally what does one do to square away his pack? I was just going to find some green electrical tape and fold up the ends real nice like and then tape them...
Anyone have any other suggestions, methods (velcro perhaps)? Appreciate it

duck tape, I also believe that can use those Velcro wire ties they sell at target, just wrap around the roll and Velcro.

I use elastic tabs. My backpack has some sewn to the shoulderstraps but I know of people buying them sepearately and attaching it themselves.

Check out something called a Web Dominator. Small plastic piece with shock cord. Roll up your extra staps and cinch them down. Check out Emdom or Supply Captain. I think DIY Tachtical has them as well.
I've got several. They are great.

Web Dominators. Best invention since sliced bread for those of us anal about strap managment. No sewing or sticky mess from tape, easily adjustable.

Get them from supply captain. You have to assemble and cut the cord yourself (get ready for knot tying and blisters.) but they are a third of the price compared to other retailers that sell them assembled.

100 MPH Tape (aka Duct Tape) is the time tested and field expediant option. Nowadays many packs have velcro (aka Loop & Pile) keepers to assist in securing excess strap material.

Backpacker magazine's suggestion for lightening one's load (known as ultralight packing) called for scissors to the offending lengths. If you don't need the excess cut it off and seal the ends of the strap with a lighter.
What kind of pack is it?

As a guy who used backpacks for most of my life in the Army and in Rescue, i find that taping them up is the best thing to do. The Web Dominators is a very good idea if you have to resize your pack often. But for most people the idea of this does not happen to often. Taping up the extra parts of the strap gives you a more secure option which if you need to can then be cute away to resize your pack. If you do cut and seal them make sure you dont cut them to short as you need still a little room to resize from time to time for a more secure fit to your body.

Black electrical tape, or 100mph tape (OD Duct tape). If a little tape residue on a strap that gets adjusted maybe once in 5 years is a big problem, you need a therapist, not a rucksack.

get the Web Dominator if you are going to adjust the straps often.
if not go with Duct Tape.
I'd avoid electrical tape since in summer the glue tends to melt easily...making things sticky...

Try a couple Coomb's elastics. Sorts out any unsightly straps, though you have to be airborne to assemble them... :)

I used to use small plastic zip-ties that electricians use to bundle wire. If I need the strap I can cut them and there's no tape residue.

Other people use the big ones as hand-cuffs.
