What is the 'Great Australian Dream" ??

It is now called the Great Australian Pipe Dream. If I start a political party, one of its aims will be to get everyone in Australia in their own home.

Sometimes if you eat vegemite without a good lashing of butter you can get heartburn. Also, have some coffee with milk as well.

There is that movie T3ngu have you seen it.With the Iraqi and Thai guys get dropped of in the wilderness north of Perth and they are told there will be a bus to pick them up.Movie was called miralce miles or some such.

During the Emergency servicers seminar that I attended few years ago there this guy from WA Police told us about that incident, to cut the story short they all would have died if they didn't came across the sheep station in the far WA outback they were saved by only a day or two from death.

I have a question for Australians: When you as an Aussie, happen upon some American, say a Texan like myself who has a deep Texas drawl, what do you think of the accent? Do you think it sounds like a "hick" or is it "exotic" or just "american" or what?

Reason I ask, is I had a good friend /professor in University who was an architect from Australia, he even had his Oz automobile shipped to the US from there..anyway his accent was a never-ending source of wonder to me...I thought his accent sounded so great. His manners were so wonderful, that I thought all Australians must be like him (of course i was young and wrong). Still I admired his Oz accent.

Can you keep a Dingo as a pet in Oz?

You CAN, but it depends heavily upon your local area. There are basically two types of dingo-dogs you can get, you can get a so-called pure breed dingo from a breeder(I think there is only 2 or so in the country) or you will occasionally find dingo crossbreeds on offer.

You have to be careful though, ever since the Chamberlain case (dingo ate my baby) they have become a much maligned breed. In some suburbs/towns you would have more hassle from the council and the populace by owning a dingo, than you would owning a rottwieler or pit-bull

Are Utes common in Australia?

Utes where invented and perfected in Australia, so yes, very very common.

I have a question for Australians: When you as an Aussie, happen upon some American, say a Texan like myself who has a deep Texas drawl, what do you think of the accent? Do you think it sounds like a "hick" or is it "exotic" or just "american" or what?

This is probably more of a personal judgement thing, but to me it just sounds "American". Oddly enough when australians cameo on american TV shows, our accent sounds more out of place.
Probably the folks who cop it worst are the canadians, to many australians, they sound exactly the same as americans and will often be subjected to yank jokes until they point out they are canadian.

Why would Australians have their own version of Top Gear since the show is already as good as it can be right now?

Do Auztralians like to downgrade things?

I beleive the idea was to use the format to showcase cars more likely to appear on australian roads, and also provide representation of australian cars without clarkson having an ulcer.

Unfortunately, the show fell down mainly because they tried to follow the format TOO closely, up to and including having the three presenters talk exactly the same as the original presenters.

Not many street drag racing do to hoon laws which is good.

what's Australia?

The name Australia is derived from the Latin australis, meaning "southern". Legends of an "unknown land of the south" (terra australis incoqnita) date back to Roman times and were commonplace in medieval geography but were not based on any documented knowledge of the continent.

.

I just spent two weeks in the states about a month back. One week in detroit and another in the amarillo area. Drawl is fine once you get used to it.

Problem is most Texans dont understand the Australian/New Zealand/South African/British accent. I have been told these are the same p-)

I think it's the southern accents that some highfalutin east and west coasters turn their nose at. Being from New York myself, it's not like any of the local accents around here sound any better. Luckily for my I have a pretty non-specific American accent.

Speaking of accents, has anyone noticed that the roles for American characters in movies and TV are being outsourced to Australians? Do you guys get a lot of American TV down there (feel sorry for you if you do) to practice immitating the accent with or something?

There's Outback school of Air

Many school children in the Australian outback live so far away (hundreds of miles) from any town or school that they study at home, only actually going to school - that is going into the school building - for a week or two a year - all learning is done at home, via the post, TV, radio and video or via the internet.
Work when completed is sent to the teacher by post.sing radios and internet with teacher on other end.

Utes are very popular. I myself have one. It upsets my uptight neighbours with its rumbling 5.7 Litre V8 (with a six speed manual gerabox).

Roo seeks psychological help

Jennifer Eliot
September 17, 2009 12:00am

AN Atherton psychologist got the fright of her life yesterday when a large kangaroo busted into her office and forced her to leap on to a desk for safety.
The 1.5m roo created more than six minutes of havoc at the office shared by psychologist Suzanne Habib and disability employment agency, Commonwealth Rehabilitation Services Australia.
But the drama did not end there.
The escaping roo bolted out of the office and nearly knocked over an elderly woman using a walking fame to make her way along Railway Lane before the frightened animal headed up Jack St.
Click here to read more about the roo which burst into an office (http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2009/09/17/64415_local-news.html) ................

What's poofy about a BA 1 tonner? At least it can carry more than a packet of smokes and your fluffy slippers in the tray without destroying back tyres. Ford suspension FTW!

BTW, ALL Holden IRS (until very recently) is FAIL when you lower the car or fill the car with people or stuff. That's what happened when Holden stole a 1960's BMW IRS design (semi-trailing arms and stuff). Ford, however, went with either stone-age leaf springs (good for carrying stuff) or proper double-wishbone IRS.

So there. :P

Meh... To be fair, both Australian Fords & Holdens are pretty good cars. But I prefer Fords, therefore you Holden boys must cop it. p-)
Actually, a couple of weeks ago I saw a bloke at my workshop with an SS tonner, with a 5.7 V8 with a great big roots blower jammed in the valley. This ute had truck stacks too and was very loud. He reckoned about 500hp. I don't doubt that at all.

Blue Poles is an abstract painting from 1952 by the American artist Jackson Pollock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_Pollock), more properly known as Blue Poles: Number 11, 1952. It is similar to other drip paintings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drip_painting) by Pollock, with the addition of eight large vertical blue "poles" placed over the top. It is owned by the National Gallery of Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Gallery_of_Australia) in Canberra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra).

[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Blue_Poles&action=edit&section=1)] National Gallery of Australia purchase

In 1973, the work was purchased by the Australian Whitlam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gough_Whitlam) Government for the National Gallery of Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Gallery_of_Australia), then called the Australian National Gallery, for US$2 million (A$1.3 million at the time of payment). At the time, this was the highest price ever paid for a modern painting. In the conservative climate of the time, the purchase created a political and media scandal.
The painting is now one of the most popular exhibits in the gallery, and now is thought to be worth as much as $200 million, according to the latest news.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Poles#cite_note-Canberra-0) It was a centrepiece of the Museum of Modern Art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_of_Modern_Art)'s 1999 retrospective in New York, the first time the painting had returned to America since its purchase.

Seems like Whitlam knew his art. Not a bad investment.

Do policemen often run around naked in Australia?

Bloody good effort but low on smarts. They are about to be in the hurt locker big time for that.

Those SERT guys are bad ass. I know a number of Queensland police who have interacted with them on various raids.

I read today an article about the Ghan. (the article is Hungarian, so I won't quote it). It seems to be great, a 3.000 km long jurney, impressive. Is it only for turist or Australians use it as well? Somebody tried it? Please don't tell me that it is only a train. Seeing the photos, it is more :-D amazing.

Yes, if you are a Doctor or an Engineer or a Lawyer, you are denied entry. And you have to prove that you have trade career by building furniture or fixing a clogged pipe before you are allowed through customs.

Will Wombats really kill you if you go near their burrows? I did a research project on Wombats in 5th grade, and I heard that they will use their hind legs to bash your skull in.

Only if they use kangaroos to get you. They have to ride in the pouch to get up to speed.

MN_Air

Most Aussie toilets are not like US toilets in the fact that they flush straight down.

If an american toilet were to be in Aus, it still would flush the same way. The Coriolis force states that that should be false, but the Coriolis force only will work on large bodies.

Pretty much only for tourists. It's not the quickest way to get from point a to b, or the cheapest.

Why are Tasmanians more intelligent and better looking than mainlanders...?

Inbreeding would be the answer, if that was true, it's not.

Yep.

What should happen, is you should combine 1 & 2. Then put in a couple of 3 later on in the night. Then wake up to 4 & 5. The only thing it's missing is this:

Ok. I asked because my cousin, who studied in Australia, always tells this story about how his father was asked if he had a criminal record and he answered: Is that a requirement?

I bet they get that a lot...
